Do Finns eat wild boar, and if so, do they also eat smoked wild boar? What would be the appropriate names for those meats in Finnish?
And I read today about Germany's wild boar and lingering radioactive contamination from cesium from the Chernobyl disaster; apparently that also affects mushrooms gathered in the wild. Is that also an issue for Finland's wild game and mushrooms? I've no idea if Finland experienced fallout from Chernobyl.
Wild Boar, & Smoked Wild Boar

Re: Wild Boar, & Smoked Wild Boar
There is more and more wild boar meat for sale in Finland, a lot of it imported from Estonia. Finnish hunters often organise trips to Estonia for meat.
But I guess that wild boar will soon be a problem here as they are in France and Germany, definitely an invasive species, difficult to control in countries with very restrictive hunting laws or heavy fees for permits. They cause huge amounts of damage to farmland.
I guess some people do have it smoked. There are quite a few independent smokeries in Finland and until recently they would smoke anything you gave them. There are now tighter rules and some will only smoke meat that you buy through their own butcheries. Or you need some kind of a hygiene stamp on the meat (but I'm not sure if that applies to all meat or just certain animals). But roe deer (metsäkauris - quite common in southern Finland) is excellent smoked, as are white-tailed deer and even elk (hirvi).
The only wild food we avoid due to contamination is pike (hauki). Large fish can be up to 20 years old, maybe more I'm not sure, and over 10kgs. They are predators. www.stuk.fi recommends that only young, small pike are consumed. Stuk also recommends that some mushrooms are washed (you'll find the list on their website).
