Municipal veterinary surgeon- for a rotation

Post by Kelpyz » Tue Apr 12, 2011 3:31 am

Hi everyone,

I am currently studying Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, Australia. I am trying to arrange a one month internship with a Municipal Veterinary Surgeon, however am struggling to make contact with one.

Could have any comendations on where to find this information or if you could share the email address of someone specific I would be grateful.

When you google "Finnish veterinary", you'll find this link:

Thanks rinso, I am currently waiting for a reply from the Finnish Veterinary association :)

Any further ideas on contacting Municipal Veterinarians would be great!

Each municipality in Finland has its own website www.nameoftown.fi

So, one thing you could do is google a map of Finland and then spend an hour or two looking through municipality webpages EG:

http://www.espoo.fi
http://www.rovaniemi.fi
http://www.rauma.fi
http://www.joensuu.fi
http://www.kuopio.fi

Many/most of the municipalities have information in English on their webpages, or at least enough to find a contact name and address.

Local government is VERY decentralised so if you are hell bent on a local government job then I think you will have to apply to the towns/cities individually.

I have no idea what municipal veterinary surgeons do, but I guess much of it is related to health and hygiene in farming.

You might find some useful info on http://www.evira.fi/portal/en/ and on http://www.mmm.fi/en/index/frontpage.html

They have some official duties, indeed like health inspections. But that is only a minor part of their job. The majority of the work is normal veterinary practice with a big accent on farm animals. In the countryside they are the only vets. In cities there are also private clinics that concentrate on domestic pets.

Thankyou Penelope!! I didnt realise that minicipalities had their own websites!!

Rinso- that is exactly what I want to do as my placement has to be a "public" rather than private clinic.

Thank you for your assistance.

So, you want to stick your arm up cows' arses... why didn't you say that before?

Could you not try and get some help via the Helsinki University?, they appear to have a relevant faculty. Maybe you catch them on a nice day and they give you a few pointers.

If you wish to do actual vet work, I recommend trying some a bit more rural town, rather than Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere or Turku. In the big cities the municipal vets do a lot more paperwork, compared to rural towns where they actually visit farms (municipal vets have a care duty for local production animals - not too many of those in big cities).
