What would be a fair amount for a Jr.Developer job?

Post by davidals » Sat Apr 30, 2011 6:14 pm

Hi,
I'm quite excited with the oportunity of living in Finland. And I am in the middle of a process of getting a position in an IT-company.
I am a recently graduate with 2 years of experience. I would be working as a Jr. .Net(C#/Asp.NET) Web Developer. I was told about an average of 1500EU/Month, which from what I've read here it's a bit low and under my expectations. But after an Year I would get a pay raise to over 2000EU/Month.

So, to sum it up.
This job will take place in Lappeenranta. What would be a fair amount to a Single male like me earn per month?
From what I've seek rental for 1 room apartment it's round 500EU. Taxes are round 20% (Am I right?) Which would leave me with about 600EU for food, transportation, entertainment etc.

Could you give me any advice?
Is this salary enough? What would be the life quality that I would get? What benefits should I ask for? I Was told I was being given these benefits: Additional Health Insurance, Voluntary pension insurance(I don't really know what this is), shared expenses for physiotherapy, dentistry, eye glasses, fitness and lunch coupons. Is this fair?
Should I ask for more?

Thanks in advance.

Should I ask for more?
Nokia is laying off 1400 people in Finland. If you ask to much, they find somebody else.

Both of those salary figures sound too low, but I don't know what you should do about it. Others here may be able to advise.

Are you coming from outside the EU? Have you checked with a Finnish union for advice?

I don't see why Nokia layoffs would reduce starting salaries for ASP.NET developers with 2 years' experience. You should not be intimidated by that.

Good luck,

CM.

I'm from a very far land (Brazil). And I didn't check with any Finnish union (Could you please inform me any websites?). I'll wait for some more advice here and then I'll go there :)

Both of the quoted figures seem low, although I'd hate to guess what would be "fair"

Average salaries in different age groups: http://www.stat.fi/til/yskp/2009/yskp_2 ... 02_fi.html
(just to give some idea of the overall wage levels in the country)
Group 3 "experts", group 4 "office workers and customer service personel". Google translate perhaps can help to understand some other terms)

Either they want to get somebody to work with them for a short time cheap, or then possibly they consider hiring an immigrant that much of risk, that they need to be compensated by the low salary initially.

As such a single man could live with the money, and if you're OK at your job if they are not ready to pay you more one would expect somebody else will be (I do not have expertise on the labour market situation in that area). Tax rate (with other mandatory fees) for 18-24 000 salary range seem to be from 17.3% to 21.3%
http://prosentti.vero.fi/veropros_tieto ... nguage=ENG
Additional Health Insurance, Voluntary pension insurance(I don't really know what this is)
Considering the low base salary I wouldn't expect them to pay really anything above the legally required amounts.
