Physics teacher looking around for a job

Post by gavran » Sat Aug 27, 2011 5:52 pm

Hello. It's my first post to this forum and I'm not hard-core looking for a job, I'm just inquiring about the possibility and increasing my set of options. I'm nowhere near Finland yet so I'm just looking for information. Hypothetically.

So, I'm interested if there is any chance to get a job in Finland as a physics teacher. So I'm just looking for a place to start the snooping. I've found some "Jobs in Finland" web sites, but they are commercial and will give all the data about getting a job as a manager or a designer, but nothing about pre-university education. (Does that mean that those posts are not really in supply?)

Another problem, naturally, is that I don't speak Finnish (yet). Is there *any* possibility of teaching physics in English (schools that have classes in English?) at all?

I have five years of experience in teaching physics in primary and secondary schools in Croatia (not EU yet, but is allegedly planned to become one in a year or two).

Any information or subjective personal experience would help. Thanks.

Yes, there are schools that teach the Finnish syllabus in English all over the country. However, given that there are so many teachers in Finland who not only have Masters degrees in their subject but also speak fluent English, a lot of those posts are actually occupied by Finns. So, you would be in competition with highly-qualified Finnish teachers for any available job opening.

Jobs are usually advertised on www.mol.fi

Getting experience in an IB world school might help you since all the IB schools in Finland teach in English. (but not all schools that teach in English are necessarily IB schools).
