You are planning to be a sheep farmer in Finland? Good luck, but the market value of sheep is what will determine your viability.
Re: We intend to invest in Finnsheep Farming
Sheep farming is a rapidly growing business in southern Finland. I tried to buy some sheep last spring and it was too late. The farmer I contacted (an organic farmer in Raasepori) had already sold all his lambs. So I'll be getting my order in really early next year.
Didn't understand what the OP was asking though. "If you have any offer..." Offer of what exactly. Are you trying to buy sheep or land or are you looking for farmers who need venture capital???

I think your intention makes sence. Finn sheep, one of the few remaining flocks of pure breeds left in Finland. They are beautiful creatures, with fabulous wool for felting and are apparently excellent mums to their lambs! These live in Värtsilä, where I went on a natural wool dyeing workshop, under the great tuition of Rod Welch and Karoliina Arvilommi.

How much land do you have for your sheep? We have been looking to buy a place with enough land to keep some summer sheep on, But are being told that in Lohja you need two Hectares minimum before you are allowed to keep any animalspenelope wrote:Sheep farming is a rapidly growing business in southern Finland. We have plenty of space at the mökki but the problem is that we have a young visakoivu plantation next to our field so we would have to keep them away from that, which means erecting a fence... If the sheep run out of grass for grazing they will eat anything they can find! Do you feed yours? I would imagine that there isn't enough grass on a 2 hectare field to support 17 sheep all summer??? We also have a "back" field which is too wet for sheep so we are currently building drainage ditches and putting in some pipes.
The main problem would probably be lynx... Our neighbour (a cereal farmer) has seen a lynx in his fields several times this year.
You may well get a PM from me in a few months' time... I'd be really interested to know more about how you manage your flock, the problems you've had etc. Seventeen sheep is A LOT. We are thinking more of 3 or 4. What arrangements do you have for slaughter and disposing of the meat?
BTW, there was an article in Helsinki Times this week about sheep farming. Unfortunately the journalist doesn't quite know her lamb from her mutton (and didn't once use the term "hogget" which is strictly speaking what most of the meat sold commercially in Finland should be called). But It raised an interesting point about "spring lamb" and the fact that consumers want lamb at Easter which means rearing the animals indoors, totally out of sync with their natural breeding cycles in the Nordics. It's !"#¤% to blame the trend on the consumers though since in reality it is the retailers who are pushing spring lamb on the consumer since they can sell it at premium prices when other meat (eg game) is not available. NOW is the best time of the year to eat Finnish lamb. And it is really, really good.
