New to all this!

Post by scoobymcdoo » Thu Jun 24, 2004 9:36 pm

Hi

In October we will be moving to Helsinki (Espoo) area from England, we only found out two days ago. I have a few initial questions (so far)...

I have heard that if I want to take my car to Finalnd I will have to pay a huge importation tax, is this true... how much would it be for a VW Beetle?

We also have two cats, are there any laws on bringing cats into the country? Has anyone had experience of putting cats on a plane?

and finally for today.......what is the best book to buy for learning the language?

Many thanks
Hannah

My wife and I came from england with 2 cats.

We took them on a BA flight, and you really need to book with them on
the phone, as only certain flights take animals and they need to reserve
a place in the warm hold. You will need to get an airline certified travel
box which has to be large enough for the cats to stand and turn around.

It cost something around £100 for the cats to fly.

No pet passport is required to bring a cat directly from UK to Finland, but
remember if you want to take them back one is required or quarantine
for 6 months would be required. The whole process for a cat passport can
I believe be done in Finland, but the whole process takes about 9 months,
so it's something to keep in mind.

You will however need a certificate from a vet done afew days before
travelling stating the cats are healthy and fit to travel.

The advisor at BA I spoke to suggested not sedating the cats, incase of
breathing difficulties, they were however terrified when the arrived in
Helsinki, so if I ever had to fly them again, I would ask the vet about
natural sedatives.

Hope this helps.

You mean a real beetle or one of those modern jobs?

If you've owned the car for a while and import it as personal items there isn't much you have to do in paying. Theres going to be some sale restrictions (but nobody here will buy a car with the wheel in the passenger seat anyhow so the issue is moot). Fixing the lights and getting a block heater isn't that expensive. Winter tires will cost some.
Cheers, Hank W.
