please read if you fluently speak Finnish!

Post by Lintusgirl » Tue Jun 29, 2004 6:20 am

Hi! Sorry I keep bugging you guys about all this stuff regarding Finland! But I was just curious as to how you would say these words in Finnish:

shadow
dark
dream
girl
love
gothic
scream

Also, if you know any swear words in Finnish, those might come in handy at some time or another! Please, pass them along! Thanks!

well for simple words you can just look them up in a dictionary

http://dictionaries.travlang.com/FinnishEnglish/

http://www.freedict.com/onldict/fin.html

And as for swear words, well of course they get the *#¤ treatment so guess you'll just have to wait :wink:

Some of the words you list could be either verbs or nouns.
They often differ in Finnish.
e.g A Scream..or... I scream/you scream..dont scream!
In the Finnish language nouns have as many as 15 case endings...
The basic nominative...A Scream or The Scream...but then there are cases for plural ..= screams...partative.= .some/many screams...it gets more complicated..sorry ...
e.g.
Other nouns such as "shadow" will also have case ending to show whether there is any significant movement or position...e.g. In the shadow..into the shadow..
If you go to our language school section and browse..you will find much more help.

shadow= varjo
dark= tumma
dream= uni
girl= tyttö
love= rakkaus (to love= rakastaa)
gothic = gootti
scream= huutaa (lot of verbs for that in finnish, like karjua, kiljua, rääkyä etc but considering the poetic nature of other words you asked, this would be right one to use this case)

Making a personal add? :lol:
I am skipping the swear words , i don't think it's proper to post them here. Maybe you can persuade Thomas to write down things i say when i read some posts on other threads on this board. :D

Umm.. I see you point Mai..

Perhaps we should give some more poetic translations.. :wink:

e.g. "sweet dreams my love!..."
kaunita unia kultasini...or..mun rakastajani kaunita unia...

How many more poetic combinations from this list can we think of?

Must be something poetic in "love in the dark shadows!"... :roll:

Are The Rasmus getting big in the States too? I heard they just played two sold out nights at the Astoria(capacity approx 2000) in London. Thats quite amazing considering they were completly unknown in England a few months ago.

Peter, if you are giving translations in Finnish, perhaps you should leave it to the Finns. Constructive criticism alert!!! :twisted: :roll:

the correct translation (and I am noway fluent in Finnish) is:
kauniita unia kultaseni

Joo joo :roll: .translating that to Finnish needs more than just a little "poetic licence!"...plus better Finnish than mine...
My best attempt..
Tummassa varjoissa mun tyttöni uniasta,
Hänen rakuas koitua gootin hihkunta. :wink:

You should know by now that I can neither type or spell in any language..
Also I learnt my Finnish in a pub...not in a classroom...so I write what I heard..sometimes (most times perhaps)..did not hear clearly what was said..

Varjojen pimeydessä unelmien tyttöni
hänen rakkaus täynnä kotikiljua.

Not the right translation, but a more amusing one!!

After seeing Macbeth in verse - the Finnish translation was to the verse too this really requires a lot of koskenkorva :wink:

I like Daives version.

Ah, but don't you know. There is the 16th case of Finnish, the 'agressiivi'.
(hint: search google)

This link if you search hard will give a few pointers.

http://www.dazle.freeserve.co.uk/finland/finland.htm

It also has a lot of interesting/fun stuff e.g I love the food article..Bambi for 2 with fries!.. which I suspect was written by one of our members..(who is now on holiday until the 2nd of August!)
