I don’t own an iPad myself but I recently had to set up one for a relative. While I was browsing through the AppStore offerings and trying to preload the device with some interesting content, I thought I might just as well list some of the apps I found here in the hopes they would perhaps be useful for those trying to learn the Finnish language and who are seeking for authentic reading material, such as facsimiles of the actual print magazines (complete with the original print layout, “human interest” feature stories and all) instead of just rudimentary news websites.
So here goes — this is a (fairly incomplete) list of Finnish magazines and newspapers which have a presence in iTunes/AppStore, and offer a free iPad reader app with at least a single free-of-charge sample issue:
- Aku Ankka
Aku Ankka is the Finnish name for Donald Duck. This is the app for reading the Finnish Donald Duck comic magazine. The app allows reading a sample issue free of charge. - Tekniikan Maailma
“The World of Technology”: A bimonthly magazine testing and reporting on the latest developments concerning cars, motorbikes, boats, bicycles, consumer electronics, household appliances, power tools, space exploration, science, aviation, traffic, computers, innovations, etc. The app allows downloading and reading a free sample issue. - Teknari
Similar in style and content to the above, but not as extensive or in-depth. The plus side is all the issues are totally free of charge (ad-supported). - Iltalehti
A Finnish tabloid. The app allows reading three sample issues free of charge. - Ilta-Sanomat
Another Finnish tabloid. Allows reading a free-of-charge sample issue. - Me Naiset
A women’s magazine. A free sample issue is available for download and viewing. - Gloria
A fashion magazine for women. A free sample issue is available for download and viewing. - Lehtiluukku Lite
An app for reading many smaller magazines and ad-sponsored local papers free of charge. (You can also read those free magazines here without an iPad, using your PC.)
You might also want to check out Suomen Kuvalehti, Helsingin Sanomat, Anna, Aamulehti, Turun Sanomat, Tietokone, ... some of which come with free sample issues as well.
