WORKING FOR FINNISH ORG. IN MY HOME COUNTRY,HOW DOES IT GO??

Post by Eledi » Sat Apr 14, 2012 5:41 pm

Hello
So, this is confusing me much, what am i? expatriate? inpatriate? nobodypatriate??? or what?
Ok, so i am a foreigner, i live permanently in Finland with a permanent residende(not Finnish citizenship). I am working with a Finnish organization, and now they are sending me to work for 6 months to my home country. I start to prepare my tax card and then i'm told wait a minute, we'll have to check this out cos may be you won't need that, you could be exempted from paying tax. Is this possible? how? I do hope to God that i don't enjoy the money and get fat, only to find a pile of letters from the tax office as soon as i am back in Fin.
Please advise me, any ideas
1.on my status, i mean WHATpatriate??? am i?
2.on the tax thing, cos i checked the tax webpages and i don't get to find the exact information as my situation is may be so rare or it weird for that matter

On the surface of it I think your situation is not so tricky:

1) you're a resident of Finland, and a citizen of your home country. 'Expat' is pretty loose term that people toss about. IMO, expats are sent to another country by their employer for a set period and then they bugger off home again ;)

2) is your home country EU / EEA and will the time there be more or less than 6 months? If it's < 6 months the rules are different than if it's > 6 months.

If there are still questions your employer can request tax office to make a ruling in your case. Tax office here likes to help the 'customer'!

You should find some answers in these. Basically I think the six-month rule applies, so you need to be more specific about the time you will spend out of Finland. But your liabilities may also depend on which country you will be working in and what kind of bilateral tax treaty that country has with Finland, especially if your assignment exceeds 183 days..

Citizenship/nationality is not a deciding factor on whether or not you pay tax, but residency is. If you are a permanent resident of Finland, you are liable for tax in Finland, even if you are a non-Finn working on an assignment abroad.

You need to check with Vero how the 6-month rule is calculated. If I remember correctly, any return trips to Finland during the six-month assignment would not count towards the 183 days cut-off. But I can't remember if travel days count or not (ie the day you fly out and and the day you fly in). The devil is in the details... Vero can confirm the details.
