moved from Finland: question about veroilmoitus

Post by movedfromfinland » Mon Apr 23, 2012 5:06 pm

Hello,

I hope you can solve my question.
So I am a foreign citizen who lived in Finland until 2.010. In 2.010 I moved back permanently to my country of origin.
In 2.011 I got the veroilmoitus for year 2.010 which was normal because I lived in Finland that year.
Now I got the veroilmoitus for year 2.011. Of course it says EI MAKSUA/PALAUTUSTA, and all the spaces for income are blank, because I wasn't in the country/got nothing from the country. It says "verovelvollisella ei tuloja verovuonna 2011" and I don't understand what it means, I guess it means I don't have any tax obligations for year 2.011, isn't it?

Also, will I still get one of these papers every year? Or was it just 2.011 because it was my first year out of the country?

I was planning to send vero an email, but I cannot find any of their email addresses.

Thanks a lot for all the help.

They had correctly noted you had no income to be taxed here. As it is, it does not really matter if they send a form like that or not(?)

No, it doesn't really matter, I just thought that they wouldn't send it anymore.
Also, in "kotikunta" it says the city which I lived in Finland, but I guess they just write the last place you lived in during your stay in Finland (?)

Yes of course, I communicated it to maistraatti, kela etc

Anyway, does anyone know their email address just in case that I need it? I cannot find it anywhere.
Thanks a lot.

You don't tell Maistratti... you go into a post office and get a form from the Finnish population register, then you fill that out stating where you are going, when and why.

After that EVERYONE should know that you are permanently out of the country. Might be that a few places know and a few others don't...

In fact this sounds like exactly what has happened because I was told before I left that I needed to do this to avoid letters like this. Looks like you may not have done your homework before leaving.

Well you DO tell them by ticking the right box in that form you're describing. If you don't the post office will know you moved, but nobody else will.

Yes, and just to clarify, the "muuttoilmoitus" that you get from Posti or a Maistraatti is just one way (there is a number you can call or fill in an electronic form at www.muuttoilmoitus.fi). BUT the important part is indeed that you inform the Maistraatti in some way, like you already did (so Kutittaa was the one here who didn't do his homework before leaving).

Yes, I did the muuttoilmoitus just before leaving, so posti and maistraatti know it. (and bank, kela...)
Vero must know it because they have my address and that's where they send me their letters, and they do not send me verokortti anymore (which they would if they thought I lived in Finland, wouldn't they?),they just send the veroilmoitus. I checked it long ago, and my address had changed to ulkomaa in their website. Also when I moved out, they sent me a letter asking me for my bank account in my new country to be able to give my veronpalautus of 2.010
Maybe my henkilötunnus just came across in their website because my divorce process in Finland didnt finish until january 2011.

Anyway there's nothing weird in the papers, they correctly stated that there's nothing to tax from me in that year. It's just the verokunta part which I dont understand.
In their website I found that when you move out you must still do the veroilmoitus for the year of your relocation.

If anyone knows any email address from vero please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

It would be possible that you'd have some income from Finland (which would be taxed here) even if you don't live here anymore. Also, it sounds plausible that they keep the "verokunta" as it was while you were still living here.

I'd venture to guess they stop sending you papers after a while.

They seem to like calls instead of emails ( http://www.vero.fi/en-US/Tax_Administra ... nformation ), but I don't know is there any reason to bother.

Email isn't encrypted -> tax.fi don't use it to protect your privacy.

I am yet to get any sort of forms like the OP has... so I guess I did something right.

I didn't bother doing research into the form entirely. I filled it out months ago and sent it away. I had a lot of other forms to fill out then as well I don't really remember what went in it. I knew there was a way to do it online but I didn't want to mess around with that and I had to go to the post office anyway. So because I didn't bother with checking about it online I didn't mention it here.

Otherwise the rest is just nitpicking over details.

On-topic. I think RIP hit the nail on the head.
