First days in Helsinki - JOB NEED URGENT

Post by Carlos Cordeiro » Wed Jan 23, 2013 10:11 pm

Good evening everyone.
I'm a Portuguese citizen who is currently living in Helsinki permanently. I moved here for about a week and a half and I'm looking for employment.
I am a civil engineering technician, now with over 12 years experience in various areas, including designer, measurements, budget, tenders, among others. Are you aware of high level technical software in AutoCAD, REVIT, CYPECAD, among others, as well as generic software under Windows and MS Office.
I would like to continue to qualify in this area, however, and in order to not be unemployed long here I am fully available to face new challenges in this or other areas.
If someone can give help or want more details you can contact me via email ccordeiro.fi @ gmail.com
Thank you all.

Kiitos

Carlos Cordeiro

So you came without a good plan or preparation. (and without a plan B  )
When you read this forum you'll discover how difficult it is for foreigners to find a job here, especially if they don't speak Finnish.
But you might also discover some general advice and useful links that can help you.

Good morning "rinso"
I understand your comment, but you aren't 100% correct.
Sure I came with a plan A, B and C also :), including as well a time before my arrival preparing and trying to have some contacts. I came here twice times before January, does some contacts and try to understand how Finland Job Market works.
Also sure I'm conscience about the difficults, but isn't enought motiv to give up.
As I know about this Forum only some days ago, I decide to register and, of course, also try to take some help from here...sure this is one of the objectives of criation of Finland Forum.
Thanks for your comment and suggestions.

Kiitos

So in other words, from the government point of view, you are a tourist. ;) You might have the "intention" of staying in Finland (due to HBS maybe), but as far as the government is concerned you aren't living permanently until you find work or some other "reason" (the HBS) and are "in the computer." and have an ID number. So unfortunately you can't register as a jobseeker or get onto an immigrant integration course. Don't expect miracles though, even if you get listed as a jobseeker the (un)employment office won't find you work.
I came here twice times before January, does some contacts and try to understand how Finland Job Market works.
Well, it doesn't. Everyone gets sacked all the time ;) OK, so think you being a Finn moving to your hometown and then figure out what the chances are for someone who cannot speak Portugese to find a job. Easy? There is quite a lot of small industry around, but as you can see from www.mol.fi ... notice something?

Well so, if you have the HBS, then you better try and get yourself "in the computer", but in any case go to a language course even you have to pay for it yourself. If you get "in the computer" they have immigrant integration courses... high demand for bus drivers and hospital workers.

Judging by your posts, your English is not perfect but might be good enough for an English language job.

The problem is that there are not many jobs in your field that don't require speaking Finnish fluently.

And for jobs that don't need any qualifications, there are already many people competing for the same jobs - including many people who speak Finnish fluently.

Additionally, the economic crisis caused by the people in Southern Europe is also starting to affect Finland, and you hear more or less daily about yet another Finnish company firing a few hundred people.

If your plan A was "JOB NEED URGENT", then better start looking at your plans B and C.
