about Finnish women
I am living with my Finnish girlfriend. She is very pretty but has a big alcohol problem. Every weekend, she just drink without any food, and her drinking has only purpose---to be drunk. She can drink (beer+wine) in whole night untill morning speaking some strange things all the time, and then sleeping and throwing up whole day on Saturday. I just can not stop her.
Anyone who has Finnish girlfriend or married with Finnish women or any Finn please tell me: if all or many of Finnish women have this kind of drinking hobby? I know lots of Finnish men have drinking problem but women...

To my knowledge, being a Finnish woman myself and knowing many others, that kind of behavior is NOT common. Yes, we do drink & party every now and then but not every weekend and not without a reason: going out, celebrating sth. etc. On weekends, the most commont thing to do is share a bottle of wine with dinner or have a cider or two after sauna. Sounds like your GF has a serious problem with alcohol.
Thanx! This is the way I like. I think I should ask her to see doctor. If still not working, I must say bye-bye to her.heidieh wrote:we do drink & party every now and then but not every weekend and not without a reason: going out, celebrating sth. etc. On weekends, the most commont thing to do is share a bottle of wine with dinner or have a cider or two after sauna. Most definetly not typical but not the first time I have heard of this problem....often initiated by some personal problem which may have long since have itself gone away..but the drinking is not easy to shake off...it is an illness not a joke...addiction is not funny ..she will kill herself if not treated...You must get her first to the local health centre they will advise/refer her to the nearest treatment clinic..
Do not let her talk her way out of getting treatement..she will try..be sure of that... but if you have any feeings towards her take her to the health centre asap.

That sounds like your average Finnish bloke.
I don't do it *every* weekend, but when I was younger I could do it Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and I didn't need to sleep that much, but when you get older the hangovers get more horrendous.
Binge drinking is according to statistics more usual among young women these days.
If you come from some other culture than the Finnish one it is easier to "see" the problem - Finns living here are too numbed to the phenomenon. Alcohol problem is only classified if you do such things during the week - drink several days in a row - and cannot go to work. A weekend binge is "normal"
... go figure. And beer&wine are not thought of as "alcohol" - vodka is alcohol.
But no, I agree every weekend is a bit excessive.
Well... atleast we don't do drugs here that much.

There are various places to get assistance for both you and your girlfriend. There's a group called Al-Anon that assist families of those with drinking problems. They have meetings in English on Mondays at 16:30 if you live in the Helsinki region. The address is Salomonkatu 21 B.
If you have any questions then contact them on 019 739679 or al-anon@al-anon.fi or contact AA directly on 09 750200 or aa@suomenaa.fi.

If this happens just one night a week it might only be "stupidity" rather than "alcoholism". How old is your girlfriend? When I was younger and at Uni that sounds quite like a normal weekend for a lot of my friends male and and female. If some one is drinking during the week, during the day etc. I'd be much more concerned, but getting pissed once a week with your mates if you are 20 or 21 isn't that odd really for either a Finn or a Brit...

Considering the title of the post, it's way off base.simon wrote: Best opening post I have read in ages even though its 7 years old![]()
