Salary calculators & contracting vs employment

Post by Sisupoika » Fri Apr 12, 2013 6:32 pm

Hi, I found this salary calculator http://calculatenetsalary.com/calculate ... nland.html
I don't think the figures are correct though... for 6k per month it says that the net salary would be >5k??
Are there any tools that give the correct net salary given a gross salary? There are lots of accurate calculators for the UK but I haven't found one for Finland..
My situation is that I moved to Finland from the UK a year ago but at the moment I am still working as a contractor for my former employer; I have now found a job here and the new company would be fine with me working either as an employee or as a contractor, so I am trying to compare options. What I need is a way to compare the same gross amount as invoiced vs as gross salary and see what difference there is for the net salary... any idea?
In the UK it is normally more convenient, given the same money, to work as a contractor rather than as an employee. Given the tax system and all the rest here in Finland, is it so also in Finland or is it more convenient to be an employee?
Would you recommend I stay as a contractor also here in Finland or would you recommend instead that I become employee for some reason?

Sorry for the many questions, I did search the forums but I still have cloudy ideas on many things. Thanks for your help!

You can earn the same money as contractor or employee.
As a contractor you need a Finnish business number.

As an employee of a Finnish company your employer takes care of almost every detail(what a breeze).
As a contractor worker you need to do all your own details including obligations according to legislation (basic details no matter what country your business is in)

My guess is your a posted worker from the UK company?am i correct?

As a contractor though you have opened yourself up to a greater market if and when the need arises.
Just remember that if you decide to become an employee ,that your employer will be paying some extra costs to do your book keeping as with the other workers.

If you go the FIN business Number/Contractor.
Gross monthly payment include-
+Same value pension contributions as you would pay as an employee
+same insurances value or higher as you would pay as an employee
+Value of book keeper you need to pay for the fiscal year.

If you take out those 3 costs then your NET salary should be higher than that of the employee.
Plus remember that the proposed main contractor company you work for doesn't have to pay their employer contribution if your not an employee.which i guess is 23% of your gross salary as an employee.
So add another 10% of your predicted employee gross salary to your contractor gross payment!

I think i got that right but if i didn't, someone post up to correct.

Hey thanks for your replies!

@Upphew I'll try with that calculator with my wife's help (my Finnish is still very basic..) but it looks more like what I was looking for.

@cors187, thanks for the explanation - I already have a company here in Finland and work as contractor for a client (my former employee) in UK, rather than being an employee sent by them to Finland. Am now wondering whether to stick with what I have now, or become employee of this Finnish company, or work as contractor for them (they are open to this)... it's a tough decision...
