Complaint from neighbour about noise

Post by LAS_VEGAS » Fri Apr 19, 2013 8:11 pm

I had a party in my flat(first time in 2 years) and the grandma living upstairs filed a complaint to taloyhtio about the noise. I admit that we were loud that night, but still I believe she behaved intolerant as this was a one time only disturbance. I mean I'm quite a silent person otherwise: I live alone so no kids, no pets, do not listen to loud music, don't play any musical instruments etc... Today I got a warning letter from taloyhtio that in sumamry says:
Taloyhtiön hallitus päätti antaa teille huomautuksen ja edellyttää, että asunnosta ei vastaisuudessa häiriötä talon muille asukkaille.
What are the consequences of this? I own my flat, so I will be living here for a long time and I don't want to have problems with my neighbors. I heard that if you get 3 of these notices they can kick you out? Is it true? Do I have to pay some fine if this happens again?

Have you read the rules of the household ? most of the time you have to have no noise after 11pm ? if you broke those rules then they have every right to send you a letter, did you let everyone know in your block that you were going to have a party and tell them sorry there may be a little noise ? this is always the best way to post a warning before the party.

It would take them alot of work and money to get you out of a flat that you own so don't worry about it, you know better next time to let everyone know that you are having a party.

The classical way is to let gay-gas through the ventilation or electrical outlets into the granny's flat so her cat goes bonkers. Meantime, don't have parties... besides which, it isn't a proper "party" lest the police get called and you're on "poliisit" or in the newspaper...

If you included the essential part of the text here, then that seems just a "please, don't do that again". If they give you a warning ('varoitus') which mentions that according to the law the housing company may take possession of the the apartment, then, yes, that is what they can do (by the decision of the General Meeting) and they need to issue only one warning (decision of course can be contested in court if you think there were not sufficient grounds for it).

Chapter 8, Section 2: Taking possession of an owner apartment by the housing company

If I were you I'd A) not have another late night party soon B) try at suitable point have a (friendly) talk with somebody from house board on what was their actual intention (and perhaps gently bring up my point of view that overall I thought I was not a great nuisance). C) Next time, prior notification of extraordinary events is considered good manners and finally how late was this party of yours? Apartment block is not good place to live if you can never stand extra noise, but not IMHO for parties well past midnight either (even occasional ones, I assume almost all housing company regulations are stricter than that).
