Finnish Lapland First week of October

Hi
I am planning to visit Finland in October. Primary goal is Fall Colors and the Aurora. I know, December and January will give me much longer nights, but I do not think I can tolerate those temperatures! Besides, driving in snow is going to be tricky.

We are making a budget trip and will rent a car.
Some points I have considered
1. If I drive from Hensinki to Rovaniemi - Fuel cost in a econo diesel will be far less than Airfare, busfare or trainfare for 2 people. Its a 12 hour drive but mostly on good roads. I am also told that the scenery is good
2. We will have 10 days Helsinki to Helsini - So even with 4 days of driving, it should give us 6 days in the lapland

Will we get clear skies? Or is October the time when skies are always grey and overcast?
What is our best location for clear skies and chance of Aurora in the lapland?

Any tips welcome.

You've also considered the costs of the car?

A return flight from Helsinki to Rovaniemi costs less than € 100 per person.

If you are flying to Helsinki, also check the costs of buying a plane ticket from your home airport to Rovaniemi - that might (or might not) be cheaper.

You checked the fuel prices on polttoaine.net? And the car has unlimited km?? Its about 1800 km round trip to Oulu IIRC, and thats halfway

And the scenery tree, tree. tree, bush, tree tree tree, bush, tree tree tree, MOOSE, crash... In drizzling rain with about 5 hours of "less gray"...

WTF?

1800km is more than the round trip from Helsinki to Rovaniemi.

And Oulu is only a bit more than 200km away from Rovaniemi.
