Guava - Where can I find it ?
Guava - Where can I find it ?
Hi Forum,
Guava (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guava) is a fruit that I LOVE so much. Unfortunately, I cannot find it fresh in grocery stores... Why? So, My questions are:
1) How to get fresh Guava in Finland? Any info about specific seasons or timing?
2) How to get good Guava juices in Finland? Any brands?
I would greatly appreciate your inputs!
PS: I don't mean Pear (Päärynät) !

1. I haven't seen them yet. Most probably, if at all they're available then in Asian stores in hakaniemi.
2. Rubicon. This I've seen. In above mentioned stores.

I haven't paid attention to guava (nor have I ever tasted it), but several sources seem to confirm that it should be available in Finnish stores. Larger stores like Prisma, Citymarket or Stockmann are more likely to stock exotic fruits.

Not a promising sign when there isn't Finnish wikipedia page.

@daveba
Thanks for the info.
1) Unfortunately, I don't live in Helsinki and there's no Asian stores where I live.
2) There's nothing better than getting the fresh fruit itself or at least 100% organic juice. Most other juices contain sugar and flavouring.
@jahasjahas
1) I think you have wasted enough of your life by not paying attention to the great fruit (Guava), and now I am here to save what's left in your life by telling you that you MUST pay lots of attention to the great fruit (Guava), Because it contains about four times the amount of vitamin C as an orange. You may argue that you could take vitamin C supplement, Well, Yes you could, But there's absolutely NOTHING better than eating the natural whole food.
2) Actually, I didn't find Guava in neither Prisma nor CityMarket. I wonder what sources you have checked?
3) It is very sad and strange to see in the stores e.g. (CityMarket) some "Unwanted" exotic fruits such as: Rambutan, Lychee, Kumquat, Kiwano, Pitaya, Carambola,...etc... But, We cannot see one of the most healthiest fruit (Guava).
@Upphew
There's a Finnish wikipedia page: (http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guava).
Q) Is there any way to send a request or contact the responsible department here in Finland to ask about the possibilities of importing Guava to the Finnish market?
Thanks for the info.

Too much vitamin C won't do you any good. It's water-soluble and most of it will just flush away. But I'll promise to buy some guava the next time I have the chanceSamer2010 wrote:1) I think you have wasted enough of your life by not paying attention to the great fruit (Guava), and now I am here to save what's left in your life by telling you that you MUST pay lots of attention to the great fruit (Guava), Because it contains about four times the amount of vitamin C as an orange. For example, here's a text from 2006 that quotes both S and K groups. It says guava should be available at the largest Citymarkets, Prismas and S-Markets. But I think it's never guaranteed that a certain store will have a certain exotic fruit, since there isn't a constant demand from the average shopper. They might have a shipment now and then.I wonder what sources you have checked?
Department... like some official State Department of Fruit Imports?Is there any way to send a request or contact the responsible department here in Finland to ask about the possibilities of importing Guava to the Finnish market?

Re: Guava - Where can I find it ?
And because this is first time I have heard of anyone mentioning that fruit... Demand just is not there.
Re: Guava - Where can I find it ?
I also love guava! I found it once in Prisma Itäkeskus, but it was very expensive, 14 Euros per kilo. There I can also find guava juice. The brand is "Maaza". http://asianfoodmarket.nettisivu.org/fi ... ava_1L.jpg

Re: Guava - Where can I find it ?
Yup. I stand corrected. Or I'll rephrase: there isn't link to Finnish wikipedia from the wikipedia page op linked and that usually means that the thing in question isn't well known in Finland.Nuhmi wrote:Yes, there is: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/GuavaUpphew wrote:Not a promising sign when there isn't Finnish wikipedia page.

I fully agree about having them fresh. In fact there are many varieties and red ones are my favourite. But like exotic varieties of Mangoes and other "exotic" fruits not being freely available everywhere, this would be the same. It is a lot about demand as I guess, as these fruits are not very popular here.
