question about slang...
Hi! I'm new here and have a quick question....I'm getting a puppy and want a Finn-type name for her (a Yorkie). I was thinking of naming her Resubecca (I thought it was slang for Ragmop)...am I using the right word? Thanx ahead of time for any responses,,,,,Sue

Ragmop as in "ill-kept or unfashionable woman"? The word you're looking for is "resupekka", but there's a problem: it's mainly used to describe men - the latter part of the compound word is "Pekka", a male name. Even though your spelling makes it look like "Rebecca", I would probably try to come up with a different name for a female dog

Thank you very much for the info....you've been very helpful! Any name suggestions? I want it to be simple and easy to pronounce for 'non-Finns',,,,,Sue

Re: question about slang...
I've actually never named a pet.
Here's a list of the 100 most popular dog names in the Finnish Kennel Club's database, from the 1960s onwards and an unofficial name day calendar for dogs. Unfortunately, they don't mention which names sound male or female in Finnish or maybe suggest something about the dogs qualities (you don't want to name your white dog Blackie!). But here's a dog name generator that at least lets you choose the preferred gender.
