This and That, Here and There

Hi

This is one of the topics that I find quite confusing in Finnish

Basically I understand that:
THIS => tämä
THAT => tuo

But after that I get a little lost on some of the other words I find, and wonder if there is any grammatical connection to these that simply isn't being mentioned in the books.

HERE => tässä, täällä, tänne

THERE => tuossa, tuolla, tuonne.

As well it seems that siellä, sinne also serve as "there"

I find it interesting that tuo bears a remarkable similarity to what is being used as there.

Frankly I'm quire lost.

Would really appreciate some assistance.

koira tässä = the dog right here shagging my leg
koira täällä = the dog here somewhere but I can't feel the love yet
koira tuossa = the dog right there shagging your leg
koira tuolla = the dog over there in the neighbours yard shagging the neighbours leg
koira siellä = in the bar when you talk of the dog there in the yard shagging your leg yesterday

Though it should be noted that the tuolla="close enough so you can point but not touch it" / siellä="you can't see it nor touch it" rule isn't that clear cut, since the choice is also affected by whether we have referred to the thing before or whether we are pointing it out just now.

A friend just gave me some suggestions:

When answering "where are you"
Tänne => I am here (so you should come to me)
Tässä => I am here (and will remain here)
Täälä => I am here (not moving towards you and further away than tässä)

Seem OK?

No, not really. First of all, you can't reply to "where are you?"/"missä olet?" with "tänne". You can say "tule tänne!" (=come here!), but that's not an answer to the question. And the difference between "tässä" and "täällä" (two L's!) is better explained by the Uusikielemme article.

The scenario was a location where you couldn't see each other but one called the other to see if they were there.

'Still it was silly, its just not possible in finnish. All of answers tell exact position and there is no way to use those withouth knowing where one is. Tässä is HERE "hey im in HERE" and täällä is also HERE "hey im HERE but in larger area!". None of that could work in quess "where he is" because you know where he is....

Use Missä or similar in your plays.
