Can anyone reccomend a book and/or tape for teaching Finnish to foreign kids? I am ordering Terttu Leney's book for myself and my husband, but thought there might be something better for kids. We are coming to Finland next Fall and would like to learn a little before we come, especially since we keep hearing how hard Finnish is!
Thanks, AZMom

I have seen several books in the language department which meet your needs ..but as they were for young kids I did not give them more than a casual glance.
Everyone in this store speaks English..call them and ask to be put through to their languages department..explain your need and they will arrange mail order/delivery.
Here is a list of some of the books they stock.

My boys are learning Finnish as a foreign language and the books they are using in school are in Swedish (ie: aimed at Swedish mother tongue kids learning Finnish). We seem to cope OK.... but I have never seen a Finnish language book in English for children.
You could try "Aamu" by Ulla Lappalainen and Elina Vesterinen-Sumu. There is a blue book and a red book and an exercise book (harjoituskirja) that goes with the red book. The blue book is a picture book with tons of vocab and some basic dialogues. No grammar, no explanations of anything, it is all in Finnish. But the presentation is good. ISBN 952-13-0065-5. That book does not explain pronounciation so you will have to find a book/tapes for that. Pronounciation is easy as each letter has its own sound and all the letters are pronounced so Finnish is written phonetically but some of the letter sounds are quite different to English (eg the "u" "y" etc)
BTW I know many, many children here who don't speak much Finnish at all (some odd words but not complete phrases) and believe it or not some are even Finnish!!!!!!!

One book my son used quite successfully when he was 13 was " From Start to Finnish: A Short Course in Finnish" by Leaila White. It is written in English and easily understood .
I checked the US site of amazon and unfortunately they list it as out of print....and unavailable.
If you'd like I can check locally and see if I can find a copy. Let me know.

Finnish for kids
Thank you so much for the posts about Finnish books for kids. I will call Stockman, and also look on the web for a used copy. If I can't locate it that way I might ask you to locate me a copy Trish, but hopefully i won't have to put you to the trouble!
