Transporting a dog between cities by train/bus

Post by misu » Sun Dec 01, 2013 8:58 am

Is it possible to bring a dog (not a service dog or anything, just the pet kind) on any intercity train or bus like Express/Onni or VR? If not, then are there any other options for traveling between, say Turku-Hel or Turku-Tampere, besides private car or taxi?

Yes, you can bring your dog with you on any normal train. You need to book a place in an "animal carriage", everyone with animals is in the same place. I´ve transported cats on the train like that. Your animal is expected to be VERY well behaved, since there may be ten other dogs in the same area :)

That's great. And they don't have to be in a carrier or anything like that, just leashed?

Check out the information VR gives on their website:

http://www.vr.fi/en/index/palvelut/palv ... jetus.html

As for the ExpressBus buses, they only mention pets on their Finnish site (the last paragraph on the page):

It depends on the animal, I'd guess. A well-behaving dog is fine on a leash. I've had my cats in crates or even running free on a leash (a long train trip can get very boring for a kitten in a crate!). The main thing is that your pet does not take up the space others have reserved (eg. bringing in a St. Bernhard dog might mean you have to book an extra seat), and does not disturb others (and their pets). But yeah, check out the formal rules others have posted.
