British English Teacher looking for work or private tutoring

Post by AdamCalvin » Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:27 pm

Hi,

I have just moved to Finland, Kotka, with my work and my partner is moving out on 2nd January to join me. She is a qualified English Language and Literature teacher in the UK (second in charge of her department, KS3 and KS4 co-ordinator) and is looking for a job over here. She is currently getting her qualifications certified by the Finnish consulate to apply to have them recognized in Finland, but is struggling to even find anywhere that advertises jobs that might be suitable.

I know she would be interested in doing private tuition works as well as actually teaching in a school/university, is any one interested in any tuition or can help us to find out where to advertise/apply?

Any help you can give would be brilliant

Kiitos

Adam

Try applying to Tekmil and AAC. They are two of the biggest private language schools that operate nationlly.
Also, try contacting state schools directly: http://www.kotka.fi/alltypes.asp?menu_i ... ,2504#2504
contact the rehtori (headmaster) either by phone or by email. Posts for next August will be opening up soon.
If your partner has any other skills then she could teach "something" in English in a vocational school eg: business, tourism. Check the ammattikoulu and ammattikorkeakoulu in Kotka and the surrounding area to see what courses are on offer. are Most of the technical colleges and polytechnics run courses in English.

I'd be interested to know how the National Board of Education "converts" her qualifications. Here a Master's Degree in the subject (English in her case) is a requirement for teaching in a secondary school. Not many English teachers in the UK actually have a Masters Degree in English... But anyway, that alone wouldn't necessarily prevent her from finding a job. More likely the lack of Finnish language would be a problem, or just the lack of job openings.
(PS: Russian would probably be more useful than English for finding a job in Kotka)
