teaching english as a second language
teaching english as a second language
Just curious. I am currently working as a histology technician. there is an opportunity to obtain a certificate to tesch English as a second language. it does not require a teaching degree. I currently have an associates of applied science/ histology. I do not have a teaching degree. This program is accredited and internationally recognized. Should I invest in this program. I have always wanted to move to Finland. I am looking for a way to move and work there. I have started beginning Finnish lessons, but do not speak or read at this point. Would this certificate be recognized?
Re: teaching english as a second language
No. Probably a waste of money.
Are you a native speaker of English?
If you are a native speaker, you could probably find basic freelance hours without a certificate.
If you are not a native speaker, you probably won't find work teaching English (unless you have at least an MA in English).
Few private language schools offer fulltime teaching contracts - it is all freelance work paid by the hour. Consequently, if you are a non-EU citizen, it is almost impossible to get a RP because you need a permanent, fulltime job (or near enough) to get one.
If you want to teach in the state education system (primary, secondary or higher education), you will need a full set of qualifications: MA + recognized teaching certificates.
However, you might find work in other countries with that certificate. Finland is a bit different though.

Re: teaching english as a second language
Thank you. Yes I am a native speaker. I live in the US and am trying to move to Finland. I have been told this is going to be difficult. I need to find full time employment and have a variety of skills. I do not have certain degrees. Higher education is very expensive in the US. I am willing to do most any job where I can make an honest living.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hmmm, I think every American/Canadian I know who is working here as a TEFL teacher is either married to a Finn or has dual nationality...
