Flights: Australia-Helsinki

Can anybody recommend the cheapest flight options for the Melbourne-Helsinki route? I usually travel with Qantas from Melbourne to Hong Kong, and then with Finnair to Helsinki, but the return flights during the European summer are EUR 1700 at the moment, wondering if there are better options on other airlines (without first flying to London and then back to Helsinki).

If you're willing to take a bit longer (2 stopovers/33hrs) and fly with someone like China Southern, I can see return flights on Kayak for around 1300€/person for MEL-HEL in July.
