I am the management, this is a house not an apartment complex. And cats do help keep away mice. Want one as a pet mainly though.

If you really want a working cat, you get yourself a semi-adult/adult cat with a known personality. A kitten is really cute and cuddly, but what do you do if it turns out to be a really crappy/uninterested hunter? My current set of cats is at 50% hunter and 50% could-not-hunt-a-can-of-tuna/doesn't want to.

There are places like HESY in Helsinki (not sure what you have in the Tammela area, but should be something similar) where you can get a shelter cat that is semi-adult/adult and the personality of the cat is well known. Make a cat like that happy by giving it a new and interesting life, and not picking a kitten that is a totally unknown.

Yes that actually makes a lot of sense. You never know what a kitten's personality is going to be so an adult cat is more sensible really. Thanks for the advice.

I hope you plan to give your cat lots of tender love and care besides making him or her work. Animal shelter in Helsinki might be a good start.

Making a cat work? Are you kidding me? I've had cats all my life and they are pets. I treat them as such. It's not a sheep dog. What the heck? Cats have been on farms for generations & help to keep down the mouse population. I don't know about you, but I for one am not anxious to have mice running around the house pooping & eating my furniture. They belong outside.

Well, that's...debatable. Outdoor cats are rather detrimental to the bird population from what I hear. Not that I have a particularly strong opinion on the matter one way or the other. I just hope you spay/neuter them (if they already aren't) if you get one.

I meant that mice belong outside, not cats.

I don´t know if anyone can force a cat into doing something it doesn´t want to. That was kind of my point too, that if your cat doesn´t feel like hunting mice, it won´t.
Of course a well-treated and loved pet that happens to like catching mice is the only viable option.

I've never had a cat and don't know much about them so this might sound like a dumb question but...Does a cat have to actively chase away and hunt mice in order to keep the mice away? I mean, mice are by nature prey animals so they should automatically be wary of any predators around, no? Isn't the mere presence and smell of a cat on the premises enough to keep mice away, even if it's a cat that's not interested in hunting it?

Of course just having a cat around will help to keep the mice away to some extent. But they do also learn to hide, and come out when it´s safe. Especially if they understand that the cat is a hunting noob or not interested.
But if OP is getting a cat specifically to catch mice, it makes sense for that cat to have some kind of hunting interest/instinct.

We spent last Christmas with some relatives, and brought Cat1 and Cat2 along. There are mice in that house (lots) and Cat1 went nuts and went sniffing all over the place. Cat2 found a nice sofa and slept for three days. :)
