Advice

Post by FirstAid » Tue Apr 15, 2014 10:37 am

Not sure where to place the topic. Anyway, I need an advice and the situation is as follows..
I'm an EU citizen, who came to Finland (many years ago) because of a man, and I have a residence permit based on family ties or something like that. For the past few months I've been unemployed, looking for a job and waiting to get into some language course. Now, he wants us to break up (he won't even consider fixing the sitation between us). I'm torn apart and can't think straight, not sure whether I want to stay in Finland or not. But could you please tell me what happens to my residence permit and the benefits from kela?

As EU citizen you don't need a RP anymore. Since you already had one you're (probably) long enough in Finland to be considered permanent.
If you're unemployed I think you qualify for some social security hand outs and housing help. But you have to arrange it yourself with Kela and the local council.
Since you already live more than 3 years in Finland you won't get a free language or integration course.

Thanks for the reply! Actually I was informed I can get into some language course within the next few weeks, as I was studying during most of my stay in Finland and wasn't able to participate in it before because of that. I was also told that I do qualify for the unemployment benefit based on the fact that I've worked for some time too.. Ofc, I will visit kela and te office, just wanted to know how big chance do I have to keep the benefits.

Depending how many is many years and what was the reason you came here and how much you have worked... I'd say big chance.

Yes in contrast to what rinso said integration plans (available for first three years since moving in) are not the only way to get on free language courses. Government paid language courses are a possibility for everyone covered by the Finnish social security system, unemployed and needing language skills to land a job.

My bad, I forgot about the other option. Sorry.
