Looking for English teaching work in Helsinki

Post by nachocheese1807 » Wed Jul 23, 2014 6:58 pm

Hello all!

I've just moved to Helsinki and plan to stay indefinitely. I'm an English teacher trying to find some work, anything at the moment! I need food and shelter :D

I've been sending emails and trying to network as much as possible, already sent emails to as many schools as I can find, but does anyone know of any others? Maybe a specific vacancy?

Any help would be amazing!

Nathan

You should of course mention whether you have a Masters degree in teaching English as a foreign language, or only a Bachelor, or no relevant university degree at all.

Schools and teachers are all on holiday in July. Try again after 15th August.

If you have a degree & Celta/Delta & min 3 yrs experience teaching adults full-time, then send me a PM.

BTW that list is history. Some of the schools don't exist anymore. Tekmil and AAC are probably the biggest. They might have a few hours but it is always "freelance" ie zero-hour contracts.

I'm afraid I can't send a PM yet, as I have only just signed up to this forum, maybe email?

I have a degree (in Physics) and a CELTA, but not that much experience. However, my past colleagues could vouch for my ability, which (so they tell me 8) ) makes up for this drawback. I am really keen to get my foot in the door somewhere, to get more experience (for the CV), and to teach more and more!!

Thank you for your help though!

It is of course extremely hard to get a foot into the door anywhere in Finland with only one month of relevant education and not much experience in that field.

If you are looking for experience for your CV, you should of course move to a country like Spain where you actually have realistic chances of finding work.

If you want to stay in Finland and pursue a career in teaching English, you should of course get a university degree in this field.

You do NOT need a university degree in TEFL to teach English in Finland (I have Bachelors in business and French) but the job that I had in mind requires an experienced teacher (Uni degree + CELTA + 3 yrs full-time teaching adults as a minimum requirement), that's the rule. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM.

Like I said above, AAC Global and Tekmil are probably the biggest private sector language schools in Finland, there are also companies like EF, Berlitz etc. But the work is always freelance on an "as required" basis which means very little cash flow in the beginning. If you get good feedback then you can start building up your hours and most teachers work for more than one school and juggle the hours as best they can.

It is harder to get work in the public sector where Finnish qualifications and/or a Masters in English are preferred.
