tax, work and permit related issues in the Nordic countries

Post by Nimi » Tue Aug 26, 2014 8:53 am

I am living in Finland on a family residence permit A, and I was offered a job for a period of 4-5 months in Denmark. My questions are what are the tax implications if I reside in Finland permanently and working in Denmark ? Do I require a work permit in Denmark or the Finland resident permit based on family 'A' will let me work in Denmark since they are both Nordic countries with some sort of treaties?

Your inputs will be appreciated .

The EU base rule is that you need a permit(s) if you want to stay for more than three months or work.

You will pay tax in both countries. In Denmark for the Danish source income and then in Finland for everything else. If the tax rate is higher in Finland, you will pay the difference between Finnish and Danish taxes to Finland (no double taxation).

I have not read the specific treaty but usually they only concern Nordic citizens (and the family members moving with them). If your family member is a Nordic citizen, the treaties could be of use. Even then you will probably be required to apply for some kind of paperwork from Denmark (it could just be automatic get the paper work).

This is quite good for tax

https://www.nordisketax.net/?l=eng

If you are less than 6 months in Denmark, likely you will pay tax in Finland. But depends a bit.

Edit: Actually according to the website you are likely to pay Daniah tax on your Danish source income (as betelgeuse says). But you will be generally liable for tax in Finland. Actually you will not pay more Finnish tax if the Danish tax is lower the Nordic treaty uses a system where the Danish income is taken into account when the tax you pay on any Finnish income is calculated, but it is assumed that you have paid tax in full in Denmark for the Danish soucre income (the days you spend in DK).

Good luck, I am enjoying filling my taxes in DK and FI, it doesnt go that smoothly and I have a large accounting firm helping me with it.

No idea on the work permit I am afraid.
