question regarding studying in Finland

Post by birminghamcutie » Thu Nov 06, 2014 10:35 am

Hello everyone
I am a prospective student in a university in Finland( bachelors degree in nursing ) Please I would like to know the estimated cost of living in Finland (monthly expenses: accommodation, feeding, electricity, transportation, taxes etc), Are entrance examinations written in Finland ? , how do I prepare for the cold weather ? I would also like to know if students are asked for proof of funds at the Finnish embassy. I would really appreciate your replies.
Thanks in advance

Well my brummy hunny, think "London prices"... rent might be a tad cheaper, food a tad dearer. Of course theres entrance exams, and you need to pass. If you're an EU they don't ask a thing, for non-EU's its 9000 euros or so. As for preparing for the cold weather, take a dip in the floosies jacuzzi.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. I have a question regarding working while studying . How can I find a job , can i find employers online and inform them about my interest in working for them ahead of my arrival in Finland? Also I can't speak finnish (although I intend to learn the language during my stay) , would this be a problem when looking for a job?

So think you're moving to Birmingham and only speak Polish. Kinda limits your choices, so go look at the job openings at www.mol.fi. Notice something? Also, you don't say where you'll end up studying so its slightly different between a big city or some village. Realistically, you should prepare for studying at least the first year full-time and learning the language, and even then its a bit questionable. If you are going for nursing, then getting a job in a hospital/care home would be advantageous as you wouldn't need to worry finding the practical placement as you got a foot in the door.

Vaasa, relatively small town. Quite a lot of students as well, so there is competition. Theres a coupleof students on this board (search) theres been threads on jobs in Vaasa before.

I've lived in Vaasa for a few years. Ask anything you like.

Note: Make sure you search the forums and relevant sites like studyinfinland.fi, otherwise I'll make fun of you if you ask questions that are answered there.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
