Educational Leadership or Education and Globalisation?
Hi all,
I am a student at the University of Guam studying Linguistics. Guam, a US territory, is a tiny island in the Pacific.
I chose to study Linguistics because I intend to teach English in the Philippines (I am Filipino) or on the outer Pacific Islands. Now, I am extremely passionate about Education and it is my life's goal to provide Education as a human right where it is scarce. Because of this, I am deeply interested in pursuing my Master's degree in either University of Jyväskylä under their Educational Leadership or University of Oulu under their Education and Globalisation program.
My question is, how are the acceptance rates? What do they look for in prospective students? What stands out for them?
I would appreciate any advice or tips on getting accepted. Thank you in advance!

Check the program websites - they have all the information for prospective students and merits and selection criteria for admission in a specific program

I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse. I'm gonna grant him all my old underwears that fit his head helping his nose stays in place

Thank you so much, this really helps. I only ask these questions because many American schools put so much emphasis on grade point average that, even if the student excelled elsewhere, they are quickly disregarded. Because I am so used to this mindset, I was confused because Finnish universities don't even mention GPA's, which is really awesome.roger_roger wrote:Usually 400+ applications 20 seats, do the maths. Who cares? What academics cares is your certificates are genuine and says good things about you. Your motivation letter speaks volume and you tick all the requirements necessary to be considered eligible.guinaiya.tasi wrote: What do they look for in prospective students?

You can email and ask them if you are exempted from IELTS, but I think not.guinaiya.tasi wrote:I am a student at the University of Guam studying Linguistics. Guam, a US territory
Read the requirements properly in University website, supply all necessary info and docs, write a very good motivation letter.guinaiya.tasi wrote:I would appreciate any advice or tips on getting accepted.
One secret tip: Write to the education director of your faculty and international students director and be in touch with them. write doesn't mean spam, you as a prospective student have rights and obligation to ask information from faculty members related with admission and studies, take this opportunity and write to them and get in touch. You will not get any favours BUT the ones sincere about their studies and genuine interest always gets chance.
Also, I would think that I'd be exempted from the IELTS because Guam is American territory, the official language is English, and English is my native language.

America does not have an official language in the law books. I watched a documentary about it one time.
I think even from an English speaking country, you need to prove proficiency in English.

It's common knowledge that the USA does not have an official language.
I'm almost certain I've somewhere that the only foreign applicants to Finnish Universities/UAS who are exempt from proving their English proficiency are those coming from other EU countries.

Wow, I guess I learned something new today. Anyway, Guam is pseudo America, often politically disregarded, and most US Mainlanders don't even know about my tiny island.
Thank you for the tip; I'll be sure to email the university about the English proficiency exam.

Guam is a US territory under the control of the US government. Those born in Guam (at least after 1950) are full U.S. citizens.
Universities in Finland waive the requirement to prove language skills for those who have graduated from a program taught in English (including high school, upper secondary, and university-level) in the United States (amongst other countries). So, yeah, you don't need to bother with that.

Sorry, we're not quite "full" US citizens. Just had to throw that in :/
But thanks again for the info! Are you studying in Finland?
Re: Educational Leadership or Education and Globalisation?
In the eyes of the law, what are the differences between Guam US citizens and the mainland US citizens? As far as I know, it's only the thing with presidential voting. Other than that, you guys are full US citizens.guinaiya.tasi wrote:Sorry, we're not quite "full" US citizens. Just had to throw that in :/

Yes, I do.
