Post by Caroline » Sun Apr 17, 2005 3:28 pm

I am posting this on behalf of a friend. Can anyone recommend a removal company to ship personal goods from Finland to the U.S.?

Thanks!

I'd like to know what's the best/cheapest way to ship books, clothes and other small personal things from Finland to the U.S. Instead of marrying me in a couple of weeks, my fiance decided to dump me all of a sudden :( I'm in a shock and devastated, just getting out of bed demands a huge effort, let alone packing up his things and looking into freight services :( So I could use some advice..

Here's my advice: Let him do his own dirty work! Why should you be left to pack up his things and organise shipping after what he has done to you?!

Well, he's in America, his stuff is in Finland, and some of the things are the most important he has. Although I guess it'd serve him right to either just make a big fire and burn it all or tell him to fly over and pick it up himself...

Well, FedEx did a great job getting the things here in the first place. Be a sneaky snake and make friends with one of their employees, you'll get a 75 % discount  Got the boxes from the U.S to Finland in less than a week, door to door, and after the discount the price was like $150 for 3 boxes (about 30 kg).

We contained a car and an entire household worth of furniture and stuff for $1500 US. Insurance was an extra $500. This was from Los Angeles to Helsinki.

Traditional movers wanted $8k so we went to a company that ships cars and they arranged a container big enough to ship the car in the front and all the household items in the rear (with a plywood wall between them. I recommend contacting an auto exporter and arranging the same deal where you load your own furniture and they arrange all the trucking and shipping.

What company did you use, I've tried a couple but they are unwilling to help out as I'm about 1600 km from the west coast and probably 3000 from the east.

I used travelcargo to move from Helsinki back to Miami. The service was great, quick, door to door, and not that expensive after all. But then again I didn't have much (a few boxes).

You can try Kaukohuolinta from Finland to anywhere in Europ... but I guess they may have advices for the US!
http://www.kaukohuolinta.com/

For example, I have asked one of their partners in France for 2 m3 from Strasbourg to Helsinki and the price 250€ + VAT, door-to-door. For Europe at least, stuff is transported by road.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I'm planning to move from Helsinki to Los Angeles soon. I have about four extra suitcases of stuff (mostly clothing and shoes) to bring with me. Has anyone used SAS cargo or Finnair cargo (or any other air or ocean/land shipping services to the US) and can share their experience with me? Thanks in advance.
