Employment opportunities in Tampere

Post by Gus27 » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:41 am

Moi I'm Angus 21yo from Melbourne, Australia.
In the next couple of months I've decided to make a big decision and see how the other half live after being stagnated into a boring job & routine in Melbourne. I'm willing to experience a new culture, learn a new language, skills and potentially what I would like to pursue in further education.

Unfortunately as travel is an expensive excercise it would make it very difficult to do so without a basic job.

So I'm just wondering if anyone could give me an idea what kind of jobs would be suitable for someone that is English-speaking and where to apply for them?

I'm looking in the Tampere region because that's where my girlfriend is currently studying.

My background includes warehousing, hospitality, manual labour, event management etc.

Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers Gus

Assuming I have the working holiday visa for a year. Do employer's need to prove they couldn't find anyone else in the entire EU? Or does the visa give me the same rights to work as any other EU citizen?

Doesn't the working holiday visa give me a work permit automatically??

You could check the conditions yourself. But you would not have this EU filtering problem.
But if you're low on funds, it'll remain a gamble. You can come and you can work (3 months periods with one employer) but there is no guarantee somebody will hire you. Employers can find plenty of people with your skill set and who can speak Finnish.

Fruit picking is an option. the ukranians make up to 200 euros a day but average 50-80. normally this is up north however. remain positive, there is an aussie bar in tampere I think, I am told you need to be aussie to work there. or could do some networking. at worse you could jeer at the other expats for lack of there countries sporting prowess, well that's why I go.

You could allways go fishing and sell on the fish. my aussie mate tries to do that but hes allways throws his lure too high on the cast because he thinks he keeps forgetting hes not standing upside down anymore like he was is the nt and catches nothing usually. and he keep staring at the toilet complaining the water is going the wrong way. but he will learn those things come with time.

Tampere has 2 universities and 1 polytechnic, crowded with international students looking for work in your fields. They are already allowed to work for 20(or 25 these days?) hours /week without any extra paper work required. Most of them have the business network enough to get them in some kind of jobs (even though there is a lack of jobs)

So I am sorry but in this situation you will probably have very hard time finding a job. Very small chance a cleaner job in some place but again that is very very small chance. (I hired 2 English speaking bartenders last month. It took me 2 hours to choose. Think about how many applicants I did not even consider.)
