YEL coverage

Post by heyzeuss » Wed Aug 12, 2015 3:35 pm

For self-employed individuals, YEL replaces TyEL, which is for pensions. See article YEL ja yrittäjan sociaaliturva at etera.fi. Does YEL cover unemployment and health insurance as well?

It does not give you access to private occupational healthcare, no. And it does not give you unemployment protection either. Kela gives you basic healthcare cover.

There are other places where you can get unemployment cover for entrepreneurs but personally I have never bothered, it doesn't really fit the nature of what I do. The membership fee costs 2-3% per year (of your income) but you you can deduct that as a business expense. Then you can decide for yourself the level of cover you want to contribute to (but it can't be more than the cover you choose for YEL). You need to be a fully-paid up member for 24 months before you can claim anything.

Unemployment Benefit Fund for Entrepreneurs
Unemployment Benefits Society of Finnish Entrepreneurs
You'll find the links to those and more info here: http://www.infopankki.fi/en/living-in-f ... trepreneur

Accident insurance is also voluntary, so if you are working in a hazardous occupation (eg construction industry) it might be a good idea to talk to your insurance company about that.

I'm not sure if this is up to date, but maybe someone else can confirm.

You can make an appointment with a customer service personnel for companies like lahitpiola etc.
They run you through all the types of mandatory and non mandatory stuff like YEL,extra accident insurance.

If your company is active then the meeting becomes a brief description of items/tick box/pay later system.

Remember most of this stuff is salary/income predictive which means you need to think about what your going to earn(as stupid as it seems).
You can also set levels at basic minimum and when changes happen(like going over the income level of your taxcard), just notify them.

These providers send finnish/swedish invoices to your posti so paying the system is easy, its all posti delivered and netbank pay.
