I was wondering, do refugees have to join the military/civilian service like native male Finns?
Just kind of a thought...

If they become Finnish citizens and are under the required age bracket to be enrolled into the civilian/military service of Finland, I think it is attainable. Another question maybe if they have done similar service in their home country before coming to Finland are they still required to serve in Finland?ilikepeanutbutter wrote:I was wondering, do refugees have to join the military/civilian service like native male Finns?

Getting the citizenship means that rights and responsibilities for a citizen stated in the Finnish law then apply (not going into any dual citizenship issues), if there's a reason not to grant a citizenship in the first place, that is considered as part of that process. Also it implies that if SHTF, one's allegiance lies with Finland (i.e. one won't at least be on the opposing side). There's no clause in the law applicable to military service (https://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2007/20071438 ) referring to having served or done service in another country's military. Apart from exemptions for Jehovah's witnesses etc., one has to be both physically and mentally capable of going through the service (including not posing a threat to the health of him/herself or others).Nimi wrote:If they become Finnish citizens and are under the required age bracket to be enrolled into the civilian/military service of Finland, I think it is attainable. There may have been exceptions to the rule, but if residing in Finland, being in the defined age bracket and otherwise fit to serve, I don't see how one would legally get away with it without doing military/alternate service or going to prison.

There is in section 3:FinnGuyHelsinki wrote:There's no clause in the law applicable to military service (https://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2007/20071438 ) referring to having served or done service in another country's military. And in section 77:Asevelvollisuuden suorittamisesta on lisäksi voimassa, mitä siitä Suomea velvoittavissa kansainvälisissä sopimuksissa määrätään.
This treaty exists between, for example, United States and Finland.Asevelvollisen, joka vetoaa toisen valtion kansalaisuuteen ja 3 §:n 4 momentissa tarkoitettuun sopimukseen, tulee toimittaa sotilasviranomaiselle tarvittaessa selvitys kansalaisuuksistaan ja asevelvollisuuden suorittamisesta muussa valtiossa.

I stand corrected, maybe next time I'll just supply the link without trying to make any interpretations of my own.
