Hi
Is anybody here studying in this university? Can you provide information about the student housing? What neighborhood would be the most convenient choice? What is the average price of renting a shared room?
Thank you

Re: University of Eastern Finland
The uni has locations in several cities. As long as you don't know where you'll be studying there is no way to answer your questions.Mashu wrote:Can you provide information about the student housing? I am now aware of that. My question still remains regarding the Joensuu city.rinso wrote:The uni has locations in several cities. Thank you for the clarification.

Re: University of Eastern Finland
i was living in joensuu for 2 years, in 2006/7.
the university is not too far from the center, it should show up as an orange line here (that's the street actually).
rent is cheap, compared to uusimaa...
student housing is between 200-250€ for a room, and the same goes for private housing; i wouldn't pay more than 300€ for a big room in a shared flat.
the closer you live to the center the better.
some people liked to live in niinivaara (other side of river) where there's lots of wooden houses.
what else do you need to know?

The rent is more expensive now, sadly.
Did you live in a shared room? How's the general system there? One shared kitchen for a house or something? And what about bathrooms?
Is it possible to not use public transport there? Or maybe rent a bike? How's the commute from Helsinki?
Re: University of Eastern Finland
student housing is usually 3 or 4 rooms to 1 kitchen, 1 toilet and 1 bathroom, so it's more like an appartment. 1 person per room, never more. i think it's the same all over finland.Mashu wrote:Did you live in a shared room? (though a friend in kuopio had a room where the whole floor, about 20 rooms, shared a big kitchen. it was actually much nicer than the 3-4 room appartments)
it is possible to not use public transport. personally, i bicycle the whole year through (one just has to be a little careful in winter). in a smallish town like joensuu it's even better.
the train to helsinki is 4.5h, which is quite good. if you get student discount, it's 50% off (the price, not the time). without that it's %&¤*ing expensive.
i don't remember the exact numbers anymore, and it's gotten more expensive anyway.
