Need a navigator for car in Kokkola

Post by trungthanthong » Mon Nov 16, 2015 7:17 pm

Hello, friend

I am trying to get a navigator for my car with a good price. I have checked on Gigantti website and seen a price range from 30 to 400 euro.

I do not have any experience for this stuff, so that I am really confused and have no idea where to start.

Could you please give me some suggestions or recommend?

Thanks s lot!

Get one which includes lifetime map updates with no additional charges, otherwise you will have to keep buying updates to the maps separately. TomTom and Garmin are probably the two most well-known brands.

Note that the “Google Maps” app on smartphones (Android/iOS) includes a pretty OK-ish navigator function. You can set it up into a navigator mode where it will switch into a first-person perspective view and give directions by voice, just like the “real” navigators. Unlike the dedicated devices, however, it will not work in offline mode but requires a mobile data connection.

HERE maps is available in offline mode also. It's pretty good, available also on androids, not sure about ios.

As Jukka said buy one with free updates. For a normal use any Tomtom in the range of 70-100 euros should be good enough. Go to Gigantti and ask the guy there about free lifetime map updates.

Just a small note to say that google navigator works without data if you don't have to change the route. So if you start the navigator first when you have data connection, it will cache the map, then you can switch off the data. But the problem will be if you need to change your route. I have used it for quite long distance journeys without a problem in this mode. But bought tom-tom when I was going to be away without data for a long trip in Europe.

Google Maps now (i.e. since last week) includes full offline navigation on android:

Google has a somewhat patchy history with adding and removing offline functionality from Google Maps, but if you have a reasonably modern phone, I probably wouldn't bother with a standalone navigation device.

Google introducing an offline navigation feature to their mobile Maps app:

Competitor (Nokia HERE) pointing out their shortcomings:

So I guess you might want to try out the HERE app on your phone as well.

Ive never had a problem with google maps this year and im driving to new worksites etc.
I am glad google maps was working for me . I got sick of using navigators, forgetting to hide it, coming to the van with a smashed window.
Although one downfall is if you receive a phone call at a vital map moment creating a 20 minute extension by missing an off ramp.
