Will a work permit expire if i live outside of Finland?

Post by acherem » Wed Dec 16, 2015 2:25 pm

Hi,
i currently have a Finnish work permit which is valid until 2019. I am taking a leave of absence at my current company in Finland and going to work abroad for 2 years contract. Will my current permit expire if i am not living in Finland for these two years, or it will be still valid when i come back two years later?

Thanks,
Alex

Migri.fi sayeth
Emigrating from Finland
If you move from Finland permanently, your residence permit will be cancelled. Your residence permit will also be cancelled if you have remained outside Finland for two years without interruption.

Preventing cancellation of permit when residing abroad
If you do not want your residence permit to be cancelled, you may submit an informal, written application to the Finnish Immigration Service within two years after moving abroad. Write your application in Finnish, Swedish or English. Remember to include the date and your signature. Include also your personal data and your contact information.

Explain in your application

on what grounds your permit should not be cancelled
why and how long you are residing abroad
when you will return to Finland and whether you will return to Finland temporarily or permanently.
Processing the application is subject to a fee. If your family members want to prevent the cancellation of their application, each family member has to submit their own application and pay the processing fee.

Pay the processing fee to the Finnish Immigration Service’s account FI50 5000 0121 5029 82. Include your name and the text ”Application for preventing cancellation of residence permit”. Attach a receipt of the payment to your application and submit the application to the Finnish Immigration Service.

If the application is granted by the Finnish Immigration Service, you will receive a decision stating the period during which the residence permit is not cancelled.
So, you need to be sure of as not to "move out permanently" and "keep ties"...
