Anybody know a good MMA/Jiu-Jitsu/Boxing Gym (Helsinki)

Post by Dbchops » Wed Dec 30, 2015 8:33 pm

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good English speaking MMA Gym, or even just plain jiu-jitsu or a solid boxing/kickboxing gym. I live in Pukinmaki, but I'd go to anywhere in the Helsinki area for a good place. My wife says there's a couple in Malmi, but I haven't checked them out yet. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks

Nearly in every gym you will find somebody who speaks English, though all the commands and such things will be in Finnish of course. If you already have some experience in boxing then the language isn't a big issue.
What are your goals in martial arts?
I've been to lots of gyms in Helsinki area, mainly boxing (myself) and different types of martial arts (with my son), and must say that the level of the coaches is quite mediocre. Sometimes they have no idea of basic principles of physiology and age-related health problems that may occur when overtrained.
So it's more like fitness groups here that do punches as well )
There's a good group in Myllypuro, they train 5 times a week but I suspect the coach doesn't speak English

Thanks for the reply. I'll ask my wife where that place you mentioned is (We live In Puninmaki). It's sad to hear that alot of the trainers are bad like you say, I definitely don't want to be trained by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. I'm 33 and I've trained in Boxing and Mauy Thai (trained by professional fighters) throughout most of my 20's. I didn't train for competition though, I basically trained for fitness and self defense, and I would occasionally spar. Right now I'm actually looking to mostly train in Jiu-Jitsu and improve my ground fighting knowledge, but I'd of course like to get some striking training in as well. I found this Gym in Malmi on the internet http://www.combatsociety.fi/cs/
I'm going to check it out. They offer many different classes, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Etc, and you pay a monthly membership and can take as many different classes as you want within the month. I'm assuming they offer private sessions as well. I emailed with someone from the gym and he said me not speaking Finnish wouldn't be an problem as they have several non Finnish speaking people in the class currently. I just hope the striking coaches are good, it looked legit on the website, but we'll see.

Thanks Again

The gym looks decent as well as the coaches ) If you go there, let us know it was in reality
As for coaches and their qualification.. - in many countries if you want to coach you have to have a special university degree that allows you to work with kids at school and train people in general. Some knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology will be a must.
In Finland lots of coaches have a level that is just one step ahead of their students and they do coaching as a hobby. So they get all related information on how to train from the internet I guess :D That is the only reason I see why they suggest some weird things in their sessions
There must be exceptions of course, but I think they work with national teams )
