Charges in car workshop

Post by Limae » Thu Jan 21, 2016 5:48 pm

Harloo...

I brought my car in to a nearby workshop to get by brakes checked lately as it was making funny screeching sound I suspect my brake pads were gone...subsequently the repairman say he will check and true enough it needs to be changed and besides that he said that my back brakes are gone too and something else was off too and all in all it was a big bill that I was unsure of so I asked him to just get my actual problem solved for now till I get the car checked out during the annual inspection. He now wants to charge me for the change of brake pads of course plus another 55 for checking the car. I did not say anything as I was not sure how it is here in Finland but it seems absurd I need to pay him the 55 euros. Anyone can kindly advice me?

Thank you kindly for your time and reply...

Also if there is a good website to explain more about fixing cars and such do share with me thanks! I have relatives at home that fixes cars back home and now that I am here I need some education :ochesey:

Cheers and thanks!
Mae

Well that all sounds pretty reasonable. Why would you expect a professional to work for free?

Personally I'd want all my brakes working properly

I'd suggest getting those rear brakes and the "something else" that was "off" fixed before the annual test to minimise the chance of ending up paying for a re-test, as well as for your own safety and that of other road users.

We had the exact same problem just last week.
Turned out it was a big problem & ended up costing €375.93 for parts + €239.25 for 2.5hrs labour + ALV = €621.20

It had been through it`s MOT a couple of months ago & was just fine...feel better?

The total brake system check is not included in the repair costs. Its ateast 30+ minutes to do a more comprehensive inspection of the braking system. 55euro is middle money. Many many many others have copped higher. The mechanic may be a good operator.

In general terms a problem that is present may only require you to service the "serviceable Parts". A problem that is not serviced when its found might continue to effect non serviceable parts which results in replacement of 1st,2nd and supporting parts.

Brakes are really like that.

The brakes can work enough to pass a MOT test but the reality is that there is degrading parts and the longer its not addressed , the more parts that are needed to return the breaking system to standard.

If your car is of a lower engineering quality then you need to be stricter about problems because in those types of vehicles single part malfunction leads to major wear in associated parts.
