Residence Permit -- Expires Before Next Available Appointmen

I'm feeling pretty stupid for having made the same mistake I made last year -- I forgot that one month prior to expiration is TOO LATE to apply for extension of your residence permit :banghead:

Last year I went to the police and asked them as a special favor to waive the appointment -- and they did. But I really hate to go back with the same situation again. I wonder if I could just sign up for the appointment at the end of August without asking for any special favors? I will leave Finland before expiration of the residence permit anyway, and the timing of the available appointment is ok for me.

Yes, I know I'm an idiot. Anyone have any similar experience?

As long as you book the appointment before the expiry, you should be OK. Happened with me also. I showed them the email that I booked it long before expiry and there were OK. Infact I have done it this way twice already.

What do you mean by leave? Are you leaving it permanantly or do you mean you have a return trip/travel soon?

You have a legal right to just show up at the station and queue. It does not have to be fast. No special favors needed.

They don't do resident permits anymore without appointmetns. If you go there in queueu, they will simply tell you to take an appointment. Atleast they don't do it in helsinki or espoo. Not sure about other places

They do. At least in one of the two localities you mentioned. It's highly recommended to book an appointment, and if you don't then they'll make your life difficult in ways you cannot prove (happened to me), but they still accept your application and give you the receipt.

If this happens, a complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman should be made.

This is really strange. I went to espoo police station last year. I waited for three hours in queue and eventually my number came. When I told them that I was there for residence permit, they asked me to fill an online appointment as they don't accept resident permit applications by queuing. I told them that I really need to make the application as It was urgent for me to travel but the lady did not accept my application

Now I am really confused

While you were in your right to be served by them, I kinda don't feel bad for you anymore now.
They're already swamped, and you're coming without an appointment, so why not make your lives easier by filling the online application? Filling the online application before going makes things faster for all involved parties.

They do accept queuing. Next time fill the online application.
Nothing to be confused about it. Just use your head.

It's again a right to hand in paper applications. However, I read sam_001's post differently. I thought he meant booking a time online with online appointment instead of your interpretation of not having filled an application beforehand. Presumably he will clarify.

So here is the story. My residence permit was going to expire in a month and I needed to renew it. I also had to travel in a month so I first tried to make an online appointment. The next available slot was in three months so a friend told me that they also accept queuing

I filled my application on paper and went to police station to try to apply through queue. I took the queue number, waited for three hours and went my turn came, the immigration officer told me that they don't accept application for residence permit without appointment. I came home, took the next available appointment in 2.5 months, cancelled my travel plans for a couple of months and then applied through appointment

When one of above posts said that they accept residence permit applications through queue, I kind of got confused because my application was not accepted through queue.

You should have insisted a bit. They'd have accepted it. It's your right to be served without an appointment if you queue.

Having that said, you should have filled the online application. Also, keep in mind that they can delay your application to punish you it they don't like you insisting, and they can do it in a way you cannot prove it. Of course, they cannot give you a negative decision or any of that, but they can delay it.

No, just travelling as usual for business. I spend less than 6 months a year in Finland.

Why were you guys worried about travelling with expired permit? As long as you don't exceed the 90/180 Schengen rule, can't you come and go as you like, even without the permit? I'm assuming you're from countries from which you're allowed to visit 90 out of 180 without a visa -- or are you not?

Commenters are worried about you. They're trying to be nice to make sure you don't get in trouble. They don't know form which country you are. They don't have magical crystal ball to guess your citizenship.
