lost wallet..what to do?

Post by sam_001 » Tue Jul 26, 2016 11:02 am

Hi,

I can't seem to find my wallet and I am not sure if it is somewhere inside apartment or I left it somewhere in sello yesterday. It has my bank debit card, kela and identity card and little bit cash

I have moved all the amount from my current account to saving so the account has zero money now. I think I will find it either at home or at sello if I go and ask few shops or the lost property section there

I will probably block my card also but a question came to my mind is what are the risks involved if the account is emptied and card is not blocked. Is there anything else I should also do besides blocking the card?

Absolutely inform the bank so they disable your card and renew the security code on the back. Hopefully, they also give you a new card number. Also, if you have the sirukortti Finnish ID, then you have to inform the population register so they can revoke the certificate inside the chip. Any actions performed online using the ID card are your responsibility if you don't inform the population register.

The bank card is problematic if it's usable online (in most cases, it is). Even if your account is emptied now, you'll full it with money later. Even if someone doesn't have your card, but has your card number, expiration date, and your name, then that's enough for purchases in some U.S. online stores. The security number on the back is also handy for making purchases from stores that require it (most do). The "3D Secure" system by which you have to use your bank credentials is opt-in, and it's not commonly used outside Europe, it's even not that ubiquitous in Europe. Additionally, the information physically written on the card is enough to re-create a working swipe version that works on ATMs in the United States (I don't know whether European banks honour magstripe ATM withdrawal or not).

While the risk your card ending up in the hands of crooks who would do that is quite low, it's your choice to decide what to do. Keep in mind that whoever might have your card might not do this, but he might give/sell it to someone who would.
My advice: Call the bank, have the card disabled and replaced. Call the population register and have the citizen certificate revoked (if you card has one)

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Your bank might well have a 24 hour number. Google that. Call them sooner rather than later.

Call the Sello management first thing in the morning, if you can find a phone number. They may have had it handed in. Try all the shops you went to as well. Report it to the police after that. It's possible they have it (not likely, but I would do so anyway).

Don't these 'ostokeskuses' have centralized 'lost and founds' as a matter of course -- if not - why not?

They do, but it doesn't mean everyone hands stuff in. I left a card in a card reader once. The supermarket still had it later that afternoon when I went back to ask.

Might be a 'turn it in at the end of the day¨type of thing.
