small-scale business as a private trader

A friend of mine wants to ask:

1. If he does some small business, annual turnover something €4-5000€, profits yet unknown, does he need to register as a private trader?

2. Can he use a business name other than his own persinal name to do some advertisement, but not register it? For example, "Helsingin Taivas"!

Not necessarily.

If you are not listed in the page above to have to join the Trade Register and revenue is below 10k (VAT), you do not have to register. However, registration is free for VAT or withholding purposes (makes invoicing for work easier).

Yes but it's risky since someone else can try to claim it.
