self emplyment and banking advice.

Post by kinser » Tue Sep 06, 2016 1:16 pm

Good afternoon.

I am new to Finland and to this fourm. I moved from england last week with my finnish girlfriend who has just started uni to study english. I currently have a very basic level of finnish but my finnish laguage course starts today and is fairly intensive, so I am hoping I can pick up some fundamentals fairly quickly.

Having spent today doing paper work and visiting the police to register as living in finland it is now just a waiting game before I can get my social number.

So my first question is this, Does anyone know if it is possible to get a bank card with out a number? I seem to be able to get an account but then no card to use the account with.

My second question is a little more complex. Back in england I was a professional housekeeper and here I had the idea to clean houses and mantain gardens for people while I do my studies. Idealy working in my local area (torpparinmäki) and for uni students. However most of this work is advertised on local forums, newpapers and bulletin boards and Paid by cash.

So how to I register any income I my make and avoid working illegally "cash in hand?" Do I need to register as self emplyed and how complex is this to do?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and please exscuse any spelling errors as im am quite dyslexic.

Regards,
Kinser.

I can't help with the rest, but for the card you can ask for a Visa electron. It's the first card I got here in Finland, and even if sometimes it wasn't working (I had problems abroad and, rarely, on the internet), at least I was able to withdraw without having to go to the bank.

There is no social number in Finland. It was replaced in the 70s with a personal identity code (the distinction is important because having the number does not imply being covered by the social security system).

If you can get an account, then you should get a card. A card is part of the basic banking services that every ETA resident is entitled to (with some rare exceptions).

Under certain limits you do not have to register. You just declare it on your personal tax return. There are many different kinds of registrations and limits and I do not have a time to write a full tutorial here. Some links though (not exhaustive).
