The 'New' Finland
The 'New' Finland
I went to S-Market, Nihtisilta, Espoo today for a piece of beef. The sign at the meat counter said I should need to inquire at the 'kassa' if I wanted it -I went back to front of store ("0,5 km") - the 'kassa' called Jaakko and told him someone wanted beef.
He came and escorted me back the "0,5 km" - and then went into their own back room and wheeled out a pile of trays and said I could choose a piece.
I asked what the 'story' was and he said people were stealing the meat.

Interesting - 60 'views' and not a peep from anyone.
So I guess this is indeed 'New Finland!' I woder if they will still keep the old flag - but guess Maame Laulu will be getting some new verses.

Re: The 'New' Finland
I don't think it is anything new. In some supermarkets there are CCTV cameras on the beef, coffee, razors.... stuff that people steal. A piece of steak is the same price as an item of clothing and they are mostly tagged in fashion stores.
But I think you might be overstating the distance you had to walk.
(IMO Beef should be expensive. It is expensive to produce and its consumption (at a global scale) causes huge damage to the environment.)

When I go to our chavtastic Lidl, lamb legs are in huge plastic containers you need to open at the till with a magnet. Just like razors. Obviously booze bottles come with a magnetic collar.... (Just like the people buying
)

Reminds me I might pop out and go see what is on sale at Aldi.

People steal sh*t. There's nothing new about that. That's why we have CCTV, RFID chips on products, tamper detection cables, etc.

The walking was not a problem - just that the retailer is 'distancing' themselves from a sale. But I think you might be overstating the distance you had to walk.
and BTW - the '0,5 km' had quotation marks - """"" - which means 'not to be taken literally' in many cases.

in any case - this kind of assumption of dishonesty has not been a usual characteristic of Finland - at least not in most of the "100 years" I've been here.

*The degree whereby MEAT is locked up in the backroom.
CCTV cameras are world-wide now - so no big deal there - also good idea for cigarettes to be handled securely now - helps keeps kids' hands off them.
btw - what's with the popularity of razors? - are many getting the 'Jack the Ripper' syndrome or what? Can't see much of a black market in razor sales.

Yes it is, till few months ago when I last went to a grocery store in Finland I don't ever remember having seen packed meat under lock and key with stuff much more expensive like cold smoked reindeer (easily >50€/kg) and exotic cheeses readily available. I think the store location might have something to do with it, but I better not go there....Rosamunda wrote:I don't think it is anything new.

They are obviously anti-EU and don't believe in this "freedom of movement" lark...

Well certainly not when the freedom of movement concerns their wares moving out the door without an appointment at the checkout...Pursuivant wrote:They are obviously anti-EU and don't believe in this "freedom of movement" lark...
I wonder if pork products are under similar curfew...
Re: The 'New' Finland
Yeah, man! Yesterday I was walking in Kamppi and there were Sharia Police walking around ordering women to put burkas. They also caught a random blue-eyed Finnish man and beat him for no reason. The day before that they took down the Finnish flag from the presidential palace and replaced it with the Muslamic flag.
Today I was too afraid to even walk outside! Sharia Law Police were confiscating koskenkorva bottles!
It all has changed in the New Finland, or should I call it Wilayat Finlandstan! Wake up, sheeple!!!!1!!

If you have been following media, you'd know that the razors are one of the most attractive items for the stealer because of its small size and
relatively high price.

You're right - I'm not following the 'razor-media'If you have been following media,
(So who's buying these 'black market' razors - and what are they using them for? Just curious - I don't have a subscription to 'Razor News')
