Mine goes old in May 2017...should I renew it in March 2017 or do you have to do it sooner? How long does it take for the card renewal process? I had the passport sticker before this card so I don't know how the card renewal works.

About a month before expiry is very adequate. In most cases, it takes 1-2 weeks. Book an appointment early to avoid any delays.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
