How to find a power outlet for my engine block heater?

Post by elinerrc » Sun Sep 15, 2019 6:39 pm

Hi everyone,

So we are looking to buy a property in Finland and we found a place that we really liked, but there is no power outlet available at the car park in front of our house. This house also does not have a garage. The estate agent was not very helpful in answering our questions on this matter, so we are completely at a loss.

Can we just connect it privately from our own house with a huge extension cord or something? Is that a thing? We have no idea. It will be our first property here in Finland and also it will be the first year that we will have a car in winter (we just brought ours from abroad and had the engine block heater installed)
This particular house is not part of a housing association, but it is part of a rivitalo. None of the houses have a garage, only a communal car park without any dedicated car spots.

Anyone here that could provide more info? Or know who I could ask about this? Much appreciated!

not all places have the power sockets, the car will survive without but with worse fuel consumption and icy windows in the morning. You can always add a fuel powered heater to the car. Many cars in Germany have this fuel powered system (standheizung) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standheizung

In my building all the car spots have the power outlet but only few people use them. I myself don't use it, my car has an electronic/diesel heater (sorry about this, but I actually don't know how this works), I just program the car to turn the engine heater and that's all, I don't need to plug it. I guess most of the modern car has this feature.

Rivitalo implies that it is part of a housing company. You would have the petition the housing company to electrify the car park. You can get support from the government when adding support for charging electric cars.
