Yes. It's something like a 52 man roster. That's the number of people you can have standing on the sideline.
And your team has 11 players on the pitch at one time. You can "substitute" them at any time (after play has stopped).
For offense might be something like:
1 quarterback (the field general, throws passes, yells 'hike')
2 wide recievers (catch the ball, skinny fast dudes)
5 offensive linemen (big fat dudes who guard the QB and try to push open 'holes' to run thru)
1 halfback (commonly called "running back". the guy who runs with the ball. 50% quick, 50% strong)...
sometimes a "fullback" is used instead of a halfback. the fullback is (100% strong, 0% quick)
2 tight ends (also catch passes, but they provide run "support" by blocking defenders.
For defense, this might be something like:
4 defensive linemen (who line up against the offensive linemen, big fat dudes who try to get the QB)
3 linebackers (back up the linemen, and usually try to rush the qb, might try to swat down a pass or look for holes and try to tackle a runner going thru one)
2 cornerbacks (note: CORNERbacks, they match up against the wide receivers and try to stop the pass)
2 safeties (who kind of roam around behind the linebackers. they might match up against the tight ends, might cover the receivers, might blitz the quarterback, might try to stop the run).
IMHO, safety is the coolest position on the football field. They do everything. Oh, and Roy Williams is the best safety.
