What age do kids go to sauna?

Post by raumagal » Sun Oct 29, 2006 8:05 pm

At what age can one start taking a child to sauna? Are there special precautions or things to consider (like putting them on the lower bench for example or temperature considerations)?

What age do Finns typically take their kids to sauna?

Thanks very much!

I'm sorry if someone has asked this already. I tried to do a search but couldn't find anything.

Babies are known to have been born in saunas.

Keep them low, perhaps in a plastic bathtub down where it isn't too hot. As they have a hard time regulating their temperatures, babies probably shouldn't get too hot, but I never heard of problems with babies in the sauna.

I was actually thinking that today went we went to sauna! :D Then it got me wondering when kids typically go in Finland. We haven't taken our 8 month old yet and wasn't sure when the "right" time was.

It was a nice day for sauna though - we had some snow here!

I took mine when they were two months old, and kept them on my arms on lower benches. Around one year they came to upper bench, but as long as they were there nobody threw more steam. There was a bowl of cool water that I poured over them every now and then. Later my son took care of everybodys cooling: He had a big water gun full of cold water, and of course nothing was more fun that shooting the people on the benches.

Ours was three months old when we took her to the sauna. She loves it.
