What Football Team do you support SURVEY
Not living in Finland yet (hoping to move to Scandinavia very soon) but as a football maniac I did check this thread out of interest... I know it's something typically Scandinavian, but I seriously don't get the whole idolising of English football instead of watching their own local leagues. How is the Finnish league supposed to get better and close the gap when even locals don't watch their teams?
Here in Ireland (where I live) it's the same: thousands of people sit in a pub watching English football on TV every week, while local Irish clubs struggle to survive and have hardly more than 1000 people in the stadium.
I don't get this, seriously. There's more than just level of play. You cannot beat the experience and atmosphere of seeing a game live in the stadium, this ALWAYS is better than watching it on TV.
Secondly, the English Premiership is overrated. Far from the best league in the world. Apart from Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea there's no club belonging to the European top, and when English teams play Spanish, French or Italian teams they will often be outclassed in terms of attractive football and technical skills.
Support your local teams and give the Finnish teams a chance! Ireland also has a 'low level' league, but I attend games on very frequent basis and always have had a good time. It's really fun, even when it's more amateuristic, the enthousiasm of the teams is just as big and the games can be just as exciting!

And Liverpool??? Just European champions 2005, and more European championships than any other English club? not in the Top Euro clubs?gerrit wrote: Apart from Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea there's no club belonging to the European top, and when English teams play Spanish, French or Italian teams they will often be outclassed in terms of attractive football and technical skills.

But what shall it profit a people if they satisfy all material desires, but leave for their children nothing, only a wasteland.
Liverpool is far from a top team in Europe. They haven't been close to even winning the Premiership the last decade. Liverpool is feared basically because of its rich history, but modern day LFC isn't that impressing. They won the Ch.League but, and this is something everyone will admit, they had a lot of luck throughout that tournament. If they would still be with the best of Europe then they would also compete for the domestic championship while they haven't done so in a long time now. Apart from Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea, the only British team that can maybe realistically claim to be a threat to Europe's biggest teams, is Celtic.
Ok, So it seems your forgeting a little bit of your recent history. Just to remind you, Heres a little list - pay particular attention to points 5 and 6...gerrit wrote:Liverpool is far from a top team in Europe. 1) Most successful English club
2) Most successful British club in Europe
3) Third most successful team in Europe behind Milan and Madrid
4) Last English club to win in Europe this decade
5) Still a top four team including a runners up in 2002
6) Have won every domestic (bar the league) and European honour (again) in the last eight years

So....gerrit wrote:Statistics and on-pitch are different things. In terms of European trophies, Stade Reims is still France's nr 1 club, but meanwhile they're in division III on domestic level and their European triumphs date from 40 years ago...
As I mentioned in my bolded points, These things happened in the last 8 years - not 40+ like Stade Reims. You obviously don't like liverpool for some reason and your letting that cloud your judgement. what are you? a man-u supporter?

I have nothing against Liverpool, even sympathise with them (without being an actual fan). I just mean that people idolise with English teams for some reason while apart from Man U and Chelsea (and maybe Arsenal) these teams aren't world class, so that these people could just as well pay some attention to the league in their own country. Here in Ireland everyone just watches English football on TV and ignores the own domestic league, which is a pity because that way the football will never improve here, and being in a stadium always beats sitting in front of a TV I'd say.
In England I have sympathies for mainly Aston Villa and Barnet, but I'm not very fanatic when it comes to the Premiership. I don't have anything against Liverpool, I do dislike Man United. Alex Ferguson has an ego bigger than Old Trafford, and when I visited Manchester (including a visit to United to see Man U-Barnet in the cup) I found the atmosphere very cold and almost business-like.
My favourite club is Rosenborg BK from Norway but I do follow all Scandinavian leagues, have also visited stadiums during every visit to Scandinavia I did. In Finland I have a soft spot for RoPS Rovaniemi because of my fascination for the far north. Haven't been to this city yet though, but it's on the "to do" list.

This film really is well done, a pleasure to watch!

Not that I don't follow foreign teams myself (Rosenborg are my favourite team), but I do regularly attend Irish League games and always greatly enjoy it. The one doesn't exclude the other - I follow foreign leagues but wouldn't want to ONLY follow foreign leagues. Who cares about just the level of football? The smaller leagues are cosy, pleasant and the true core spirit of football: just playing for fun with your mates, without any business element. I always amuse myself when attending games here in Ireland, even without true emotional connection to the teams playing.

I coundnt agree with you more mate! Its sad to see when sports bars are packed full of "fans" watching premiership sides and the stadiums are practicly empty with only a few supporters watching. People should be proud of the places they grew up in and support the team, not glory hunt for the premiership. Those that gloryhunt cannot love the game very much or they would choose a local team.... a team that they can actually regualry watch:)gerrit wrote:Here in Ireland (where I live) it's the same: thousands of people sit in a pub watching English football on TV every week, while local Irish clubs struggle to survive and have hardly more than 1000 people in the stadium.
I agree that we should support local teams but supporting a premiership team doesn't necessarily mean you are a glory hunter. I was a stamp collecter when i was very young, at the age of six i found a stamp in a bookshop that showed that Arsenal won the old fairs cup on the 28th April 1970 exactly a year before my birthday, a good enough reason for a six year old to adopt them for life.
Because they won the league a few times recently it doesn't mean they've always been good, i've had to suffer Perry Groves, Gus Caeser and Pascal Cygan amongst others.
When i was old enough to go to football i used to be a member at Plough Lane and watch the mighty Crazy Gang (Wimbledon) rise up from the 3rd division and storm the premiership and go on to beat the mighty Liverpool and win the FA Cup! Happy Days.
I'm also going to be following HJK so would be interested to know who else is a fan and if they go to the games.
