If you don't like Gimp because of its interface, there should be a plugin available to 'transform' it more like Photoshop.

The 400D (aka Rebel XTi) is a very good camera. If you end up doing a lot of portraits of the kid(s), I'd highly recommend getting a 50mm 1.8 lens. The kit lenses don't take sharp pictures and they really suck for indoor light. And on amazon.com they are only $79. So I'd expect 100e here.

Some time ago I saw an ad for a free edition of Photoshop Elements when buying a printer. Can't remember which brand it was, but the printer in question was not one of the most expensive ones. You might consider this option and shop around.

I would suggest you try gimpshop, it operate very much like photoshop - most photoshop tutorials can even be used on it!!

Plus it works on all OS's -windows, mac and linux :)
