What does a guy have to do for a decent cup of Kahvi!?

Post by NewEnglandNative » Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:05 pm

So far my move to Finland has been wonderful. The people for the most part have been nice and helpful, and though there have been some sticker shock at some of the prices here, all and all it has been a smooth transition. Except for one thing….

I read that the Finns are the largest coffee consumers in the world, "Great!" says I it will be easy to find a good cup o' Joe over here, however, much to my surprise I have found it really difficult to find a good cup of coffee. There is instant swill, and anything at the good coffee shops I have to pay an arm and a leg for. In the states there were in every city a shop devoted exclusively to various gourmet beans and their sundry paraphernalia. Over here, I haven’t found one yet.

So my question to the masses is, Where on earth can you find a decent bag of coffee in Helsinki. Are there stores that specialize in good imported whole or ground beans? Ive tried that Kulta stuff and there is something that just doesn't jive with me with that roast. And after an Easter with some friends I will DEFINITALLY not drink any more Swedish coffee anymore. Can anyone help this Java junkie?

I don't understand the question

For outside go to say Coffee House.

For at home... instant? Of course its disgusting. (I drink Lidl stuff tho)Expensive? Juhla Mokka is always on sale. Filter coffee, or then pot coffee but thats rarer...

Now the thing to do is get some Saludo, brew industrial styrength, and drink that black for a couple of weeks. After that you stop complaining (or have shat yourself to death).

Robert´s Coffee has a good selection. Many supermarkets also sell some of his stuff.

Äh, I don´t think so. If the coffee would be what was on those two times I have been to Starbucks it would go bankcrupt very fast. Starbucks hah done market research in Finland and they came to a conclusion that it would not be a success.

There was a Starbucks I went to in France... getting a "normal coffee" was a problem. Like "Finnish normal". American coffee is tea - you can see the spoon; French coffee is too little and Italian coffee is the suds from the pot.

Starbucks is one thing I will certainly miss, of all the coffee house chains it's probably the nicest, not that they always serve you a perfect cup of coffee.

For some reason I preferred the Dunkin Donuts coffee to starbucks when I was in US. But when we were in the Philippines, Starbucks was definitely a must!

If Finland is the largest coffee drinking country, why is there so little choice in the Stores, and why is the coffee so bitter and strong. I have tried all kinds while I was there. The only one I liked was cappuccino.
By the way do they sell Coffee Pads in Finland??

I have heard of tampons doused in alcohol, but that was a new one.
